Why would the Kings pay to get Marleau? They don't need or want him. They just want the asset(s) that they could get from taking Marleau off Toronto's hands.

As it stands now, the Kings have over $8M in cap space for next season after they sign all their RFAs. They don't need short-term cap relief.

This trade makes no sense.

The Kings do not want Marleau. The rumors of a possible trade are because the Kings would be interested in one of two possibilities.

1) Any premium assets or picks coming to LAK from TOR as compensation for taking on the cap dump.
2) Getting rid of a cap problem for the Kings, like Kovalchuk, Carter, or Phaenuf.

You're not getting one of their more highly thought of defensive prospects, nor are you getting any of their draft picks, for Marleau. It's not happening.

I like the creativity. I think the Canucks should facilitate these types of deals. I think Callahan is probably a better target for a deal like this.

Btw, I don’t think Benning has this type of creativity in him
