Bad Contracts from EDM

Created by: dchill
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 7, 2019
Published: Jun. 7, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Take 2 bad contracts from EDM to get Jesse Puljujarvi, get a backup goalie that can play over 25 games, and select a LD at the draft like York, Broberg, Heinola or Harley. Still leaves enough room to sign RFA's next season, not to mention potentially buying out Alzner and Sekera. Start Suzuki in the AHL until he proves he's more than ready and then make room to call him up.

  2. Puljujärvi, Jesse [RFA Rights]

  1. Hudon, Charles [RFA Rights]
  2. Reilly, Mike [RFA Rights]
  3. Shaw, Andrew
  4. 2019 2nd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Habs make a play for Puljujarvi, who is looking for a fresh start and may be more comfortable in a group that has multiple Finnish players in the mix. Take on two bad contracts to get him while giving up Shaw (a solid top 9 contributor who can move up to the top 6 in a pinch), 2 cost controlled assets and the 50th pick of the draft.

Interesting trade but I think you are rating Jesse really highly. Giving up four useful pieces in return for two bad contracts and one lottery ticket seems a little imbalanced IMO. Yes, JP has elite talent but has yet to show it on NA ice, and I expect Kenny H recognizes they need to move on. EDM doesn't have a whole lot of leverage.

What do you think would be a good variation to the trade? Drop Manning and Reilly from the equation and maybe downgrade the pick? Sekera is on a bad contract, but he could still be a useful bottom pairing d-man who can move the puck up the ice and fill in as a stop gap until Romanov is ready. If he doesn't pan out, buy him out next year. Also takes Shaw's contract off the books for when KK, Gallagher and Poehling need to be resigned in 2 years time (not to mention the expansion draft).

I don't consider Sekera to be on a bad contract.
