Pre-Expansion moves

Description
As it says, the Jackets need to make Pre-Expansion moves that will allow them to protect the necessary players come Expansion.

Atkinson has been a great Jacket, but likely will not be able to be protected when the time comes. So trading him to Arizona makes some sense. They get a young and cheap winger to help the team grow. They can easily protect him. The Jackets finally get their number 1 center. He is not ready for that role and can be sheltered a bit before assuming that.

Nashville, needs the solid scoring and leadership of Hartnell. That team seems like other than Weber, no one really a fulfills that role. This gets them moving in the right direction while they compete for a Stanley Cup. The CBJ get a younger player in return. Wilson's contract is same length as Hartnell but fits our strategy of trying get younger and better.

Another aspect of this, is it gets the Jackets out of cap hell. They will be able to work on an extension for Wennberg, and make next summer a lot easier when preparing for the Expansion.

That Cam Atkinson trade is awful. A middle six RW for a franchise center prospect and a 1st?! And Arizona needs center prospects. You would have to give up Puljujarvi or whatever, and even then Arizona says no.

I agree the Arizona trade is awful, you're overestimating the value of Atkinson plus I don't see Nashville taking on Hartnells contract

Really. Arizona doesn't have any leadership. Doan, is probably got one more year in him. The younger players in that organization need a role model to learn from. Atkinson is very good. He is not middle 6 he is a legit top line winger. Atkinson kills penalties and plays top line on power plays. He is effective at both. But Arizona would be able to replace the loss of him at the draft.

That Arizona trade is not good. We don't give up much to get a lot.
