Marginal upgrades on D Kadri to the wing

Description
Marleau trade I still being the logical outcome. The California teams don't want the cap hit and the Leafs don't want to give up a ton of assets. Ottawa buys out Marleau, making him a UFA and he can do what he wants.

Devils want RHD and RW. Zacha is redundant there with Hughes coming, and Zajac and Hischier also down the middle. I think he's a great fit in Toronto.

With RD I think you either go big to get a big name with term or you get a small offseason upgrade, then maybe look to upgrade again at the deadline. The UFA class for 2020 is excellent and you want to make sure you can be a player in that area. Grabbing Hamonic kind of splits the difference. I think he would play well with Rielly.

The UFA's are all just depth signings (don't have to be the right names, it's just likely we will need a few guys who can play 2nd/3rd pairing minutes until at least Dermott comes back). There's not enough cap space to bring Gardner back unless more forwards are moved out.

There are a few spots that Marlies guys would fit for, I could see Engvall making the roster as a 4c or Petan beating somebody out. Whoever goes down will likely be because they are waiver exempt. Especially since one of those guys will be heading down when Hyman is back. Bracco sticks if he can upgrade his play in the defensive zone.

A goalie to challenge Sparky in the preseason makes sense.

I still think this is the logical move for Marleau, trade him somewhere else and buy him out. Ottawa can use the cap hit and save a bit on the buyout.

Maybe. I just didn't want to be one of those Leaf posters getting a top-4 D man for Brown and a 4th.

Who though? I don't think that gets you Spurgeon. Probably more than you need for Miller (plus I don't think Vegas wants a player back anyway). I'd love to see us try to pull a guy like Dante Fabbro, but I don't think that's happening for that price either.

A year and a half of Muzzin was only a 1st plus prospects, they're not going to pay more for less.
If Johnsson is the player moving, and I wouldn't part with him if I were the Leafs, the player coming back has to be in the Hamilton ballpark, not Hamonic or Spurgeon.
Team control matters and one year of either Spurgeon/Hamonic isn't worth 4-5 years of Johnsson on his own let alone with 2 seconds.

The other 2nd is conditional, but I see what you're saying. I have different feelings about Johnsson and much prefer Kapanen over him. Kap has a lot of room to grow as an offensive player and does a much better job of getting to high danger areas, as well as providing penalty killing. Johnsson I don't think has as much room to grow and therefore is not as big of a loss long-term.

If that trade got us Dougie Hamilton I would do flying ninja kicks.

Fair enough but I don’t Marleau will go to Ottawa. It’s quite known he wants to be around California and he just sold his house here in TO so doesn’t make sense to me but im down to hear an explanation on why he would consider this.

He waives to Ottawa with the promise they buy him out, and then he is free to sign anywhere at any cap hit. I thought I explained this but I guess what I wrote only makes sense in my head.
