Draft Day

Created by: Zetterburger
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 10, 2019
Published: Jun. 10, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Chicago drafts Turcotte 3, Avs are happy with either Zegras or Dach so they swing a trade with Detroit allowing us to get Byram.

Lightning also dumping Callahan to Detroit just makes to much sense.

Dumb .. Callhan at worst can be bought out of his ONE year contrcat at Cap hit of 2.6M in 2019 and 1.6M in 2020 .. that peanuts .. not giving up a first .. 2 and 3 year buyouts.. like ALOT of them .. are where 1sts come into play .. and Yzerman is not going to take a D after Deteoit took 2 #1s the last 2 years at D position .. look at Lightning .. ONLY Hedmen was draft pick .. all other eight who played this year were trades or FAs.. Yzerman will trade the pick or grab a forward

Honestly depends on what Tampa tries to do this off season. If you need the cap space, #27 and Callahan for #66 is not bad value.

In regards to Detroit's D, Hronek is the only elite prospect we have on the back end. If you don't think Detroit wants Byram you should go do some research.

The last 2 defenseman Detroit took in the first round were Cholowski 2016 and Brendan Smith in 2007.

Colorado would probably tell Detroit to lose their phone number.

Who were Detroits last 2 years picks then? I thought 3 or 4 D were taken in first or second round last couple years .. they all stink?

I think he means we took two #1 D's in the last 2 years. That's even worse, if who I'm assuming is Cholo and Hronek are #1 D than Detroit would not need Byram. That's a horrible evaluation.

The 2 top D taken by Detroit in the last 2 years are McIsaac and Lindstrom. Both were second round picks. Lindstrom will play his first year in the AHL next season and McIsaac will miss the start of next season due to shoulder surgery, and when healthy he will play in the QMJHL.

The organization thinks highly of both prospects, but to assume any teenager, who has yet to play a single NHL game, will be a #1D is presumptuous so Detroit would like a chance a Byram.

I'm apologizing I miss read that I thought you were saying Detroit took 2 d in the 1st rd the last two draft's. So for that I'm sorry.

I think Hronek has the potential to be a #1 Dman. I see Cholowski as more of #2 or#3. While he helped the power play quite a bit he got sent down to the AHL because his defensive play needed work.

No worries .. Byram would be Detroit dream but cant believe Colorado would not take Byram to pair with Makar .. that would be GM suicide

You guys do remember that Joe sakic is the GM of the avalanche right? Why would he do Detroit any favors? And if the Avs don't take him the kings will. Just sayin'.

Detroit would retain salary on a d-man that can move the puck out of the zone (probably Daley, but who knows maybe Green wants to play for a Cup) and since that was a glaring need for the Bolts this last playoffs pair them with Callahan and given the Bolts cap issues that would be where the 1st comes into play.

The Bolts are not going to buyout Callahan as that opens them up to a small chance of losing Point this year, but a worse cap situation next year when they need it for: Vasilevskiy, Sergachev, Cernak, Cirelli, Joseph, and Volkov. It's not peanuts when the Bolts have RFA to qualify and offer sheets to avoid.

Hronek, Cholowski, and McIsaac are all 2/3 guys as I don't see any with the potential to be #1 d-men. I can see Detroit moving up to the Avs spot. Fair compensation is 60th pick, but they will probably have to throw in a B-prospect too.

Colorado has 3 highly thought of right-handed prospects: Makar, Conor Timmins, and Nicolas Meloche. And 5 total 1st or 2nd round d-man draft picks under the age of 24 as they acquired Samuel Girard and Nikita Zadorov in trades. If Joe Sakic chooses another d-man instead of a center than he is holding the team back. If he is doing it out of spite then he won't be there long--but I don't believe he's stupid. But consider that LA can trade up select a d-man and lose a potential 3rd round pick and the Avs can get the exact player they want--so don't count on them only dealing with the Wings.

Det has a handful of promising defense prospects in: Cholowski, Hronek, McIsaac, Lindstrom, Bowey, Kaski and Saarijarvi. However a blue chip first pairing d-man is still arguably the biggest missing piece in their rebuild.

Defensemen to me are like pitchers in baseball.. cant have enough .. unless forward is obvious but if ever in doubt ... go D ..

Read this article. It was written by Tyler Dellow who left to become the NJ Devils head of analytics. Here

Also check out this chart that shows the amount of time it takes a d-man at each pick to crack the NHL lineup since 2005. Here
