Hagelin is barely capable of playing in the NHL, I don't think he deserves a 3-year contract.

Toronto fans are going to howl at that trade, but the #8 pick holds about the same value as William Nylander, so it's probably a fair deal. You'll be highly disappointed with Kapanen though - he won't score 20 goals next to Gagner. You realise he played with Matthews most of the year and that Matthews is one of the best 5v5 players in the game, right? Kap is being zoomed for sure.

This is a faulty way of thinking. Plenty of 8th OAs can bust. Nylander would technicially have a value greater than where he was drafted at this point, You are right though that it would be something the Leafs should consider. In a vacuum I think Kapanen should be worth more than where he was drafted (22). Adding Brown + 2nd to a pick around say 15 is within margin of error in my opinion of trading up to 8.

I don't think it's truthful to say "plenty of 8th picks can bust", as even the guys that didn't become stars are mostly useful NHL players. I mentioned Nylander because I think he's an average player picked in that range, not as valuable as guys like Couterier, Werenski, Trouba, Rantanen or even Ehlers, but better than Ristolainen and Pouliot. He probably has similar value to guys like Hamilton, Horvat and Meier... come to think of it, I think Nylander is probably below average value in this class just due to positional valuations and the fact that he hasn't produced all that well away from Matthews.
