Dubas Dream Analytical Offseason

Created by: ngutmann
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 7, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Leafs are able to trade Nikita Zaitsev, Patrick Marleau, and Connor Brown to clear up a sizeable amount of cap room.

They retain key RFA forwards in Mitch Marner, Andreas Johnsson, and Kasperi Kapanen.

They also trade a few mid-tier prospects with bottom of the lineup potential which is more than made up for with the addition of a top-tier defensive prospect in Olli Juolevi, a player with great potential who may be in the wrong situation.

In addition, they add right handed defenseman Collin Miller. Miller fits the Leafs perfectly as he is a righty, an analytical gem (which Dubas loves) and has provided solid stats over the past few seasons. (He was also a part of Dubas' Sault St. Marie OHL team) They also add two NHL capable right handed defensemen to contend for the bottom pairing. These signings could pay off immensely, similarly or better to the Ennis signing.

In total picks (years deducted) they trade a 3rd, 4th, and 7th for a 5th and two 6th's. A great swap considering the addition of Miller and Juolevi and the dumping of some large contracts.

The best part is depending on some of the new contracts signed, Dubas will have between $2-3 million to work with if he chooses to. Whether that be to sign a free agent or be used within a trade, the Leafs have a competitive lineup with a lot more wiggle room than expected.

The trades aren’t bad, actually make sense. Not sure Toronto is interested in another lhd but I get the premise. Also don’t think brown gets you that much.

The ducks trade is interesting. Holl might be a useful piece to them. The last I heard is that eaves was healthy and ready to go. Can someone correct me if I’m wrong?

I doubt Vancouver is ready to move on from Juolevi for that.

Too much for Brown.

I like these trade ideas, I have those teams lined up for trades a lot in my mind, but it was great to see some new ideas. I do not think that value for Brown is far off, the leafs were mentioned to have some interest in Kuhaira as well. Maybe he is part of the return for Brown?

If Eaves is not available to play, a trade around Marleau and Eaves works great for both teams. Leafs can use LTIR, and ducks get a roster player that only costs a fraction of his cap hit after his bonus is paid by the leafs. I wonder if Holl is enough though, maybe a prospect like Timashov, etc. would have to go for the ducks to do it?

Miller going to the leafs would be great, and since Vegas are in cap trouble, they might get him cheaper.

I agree with others, not sure if Nucks will give up on Juolevi just yet, but maybe the leafs could pry Stecher from them?Wishful thinking, Even a draft pick would be fine by me for the cap relief of taking Zaitsev.

Nice post!

Vegas declines this deal, a 3rd rounder and two b level prospects are not nearly enough for Miller

The ANA trade might be possible. I think Toronto should look into that one.
But Vegas and Van both decline.
Edmonton I'm really here nor there on. Bringing in Brown doesn't really move the needle there. That's just a fact. So why bother.

These trades are based both on rumors of potential ones and the Leafs needs while evaluating trade value.
With Edmonton, something along those lines will happen. If bottom tier 2nd liners can be traded for late first round picks at the trade deadline, I see no reason Brown can't go for a 3rd.
With Vancouver it was very tough. Initially I had a trade for Tanev (solid right handed defenseman with same cap hit as Zaitsev but only 1 year left). There are rumors that they may trade Juolevi and that they want Zaitsev. It has been reported due to interest, the Leafs don't need to add incentives in a trade to get rid of Zaitsev.
With Anaheim, if Eaves is to be out, a deal very similar to that will happen to dump the cap. If not, it sounds likely a similar deal will be done with Arizona in exchange for Hossa's contract and he will be put on LTIR.
With Vegas, a trade along those lines can very well happen. Miller was a healthy scratch often last season and they don't really use him much. They need to clear cap space and have been losing picks and prospects in deals lately (ex. Pacioretty, Stone...) so they will want to get some back. I do agree may need to sweeten it to a 2nd rounder though.
