Leafs offseason From June 26 to July 02

Created by: Boomer125
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2019
Published: Jun. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Both Johansson and Marner are signed June 30
Poink signed June 30
Subban also signed June 30
Lyubushkin signed July 03

Teams can spend up to 10percent above cap until a week prior to season - when they issue final roster Horton goes back to LTIR Leafs are now compliant with a little wiggle room

I am curious what the thoughts are on the trades/ signings minus the whole Marner wants 10.5 he won't get it anywhere so not relevant

That happens next year when PK only has 2 years left at 9 and the Leafs move on from Tanev and Muzzin

If I recall correctly, Karl Subban (their dad), is a pretty big guy. Might help to add him and give you that gritty truculence that Don Cherry loves.

Now, here's what I don't get. Marner and the Leafs may wind up settling on that term and number, I kind of doubt it, but I recognize it's a possibility. I do not think it's a possibility that it happens before July 1st.

How does that conversation go? "Hey Mitch, here's two million less than what Matthews got. Ya ya I know you were healthier and outscored him and led our team in points, but you're a winger. Oh, and we're buying out an extra year of UFA. That's enough for you to relinquish your biggest bargaining tool, right?"

I know an offer sheet is always a long shot, but if he wants 10.5, and the Leafs are unwilling to give it to him, I really think some team will offer him a very short term deal at 10.5. 1 year at 10.5 from, say, philly? 2020 first, second, third, and a 2021 first for Marner seems like pretty fair value. Wack out a long term extension in January, and it puts the leafs in an extremely tough spot.

THis!!! Plus, there are a lot of teams that want him. How bout move him for true NHL assets that can help your team now? I think waiting for offer sheet is a last resort because if you know he want to test that market, trade his rights and get solid players in return to fill holes.

always laugh when I see what Leaf fans want to sign Marner for. He just watched Skinner get $9 million on a contract that will take him all the way out of his prime but Marner who is entering his prime should only make a little more then him.... Leaf fans are dreaming

see, I wouldn't do that either, I think hes a core player. It also doesn't make sense to me to run around adding rentals, or 4 million dollar d men or what have you. What makes sense to me is kind of a transition year. Flush the team of all depth. Those AHL players that they're high on, bringem up. Get them some experience. 2019-2020 isn't the leafs year. Think the leafs are steamrolling tampa and Boston next year? I don't. The year after is the year I would look to when things look much better from a salary cap standpoint, and they still have Reilly and Andersen on the cheap deals. If it was me, I would rather that year see Liljigren with one year under his belt, rather than rookie liljigren etc.

Go ahead take a peak at evolvingwild prediction for Marner 9.95 x 8, I absolutely see both of your points but see the chance of any offer sheet coming in at 10.5 with term highly highly unlikely, now the whole 1 year at 10.5 offer sheet is just ludicrous it serves no benefit to Marner let's say he gets hurt seriously injured then what? It's always about the long game. Marner has very little interest is moving from the Leafs, he can speak with teams as of June 26 and once him, his father and agent get a real sense as to where teams value him, a 9.75 x 6 is quickly signed

I think you're pretty spot on, Bcarlo. That 10.5 OS is the real threat and if Ferris and Marner's dad can solicit one then they kinda have the leafs over a barrel, where they either need to match that offer, or they'll need to put on their big boy pants and stick to the idea of trading him before that OS scenario can play out.

Increasingly, and as much as I don't like it, I think Marner is lining his ducks up to get an overpay of close to 10.5M aav on a shorter term than what the leafs would want... or, Dubas will really need to stand firm on the CJ threat and trade him before that happens. Hard to tell what kinda backlash might come from that. But if it comes to that, I'd be for trading him if that matters at all..

10.5 for 1 year serves no purpose for Marner? Wait what? Do you understand how qualifying offers work? Here's what happens if Marner signs a 1 year 10.5 million dollar deal. For the next four seasons, he's guaranteed to get 10.5 million per season. Do you think some team isn't going to qualify him and let him walk in UFA next year? Don't think so. Imagine if he took the qualifying offer for a couple years and then had the threat of walking as UFA to bargain with? Name your price. It's the absolute ideal scenario for him. It's always about the long term huh? Why did Matthews want 5 years then? So he can hit UFA really soon, and cash in.

Lastly, this evolving whatever projections is a bunch of junk. Posters on here seem to take it as basically a done deal. They had Nylander signing long term at under 5 million. How did that one work out? They had JT signing for 9. Whoops.

Fair enough, so let's make it 10.5 for the Marner signing, the rest of my proposals still comply with Marners at 10.75

That offer sheet say from "Philly" puts them in a very tough Spot, Still have Konecny and now if I'm Konecny I want at least 5/6 AAV well cause I get 40/50 pts against Marners 90, Provorov now gets 5/6 AAV , still need a starting Goalie even Talbot will cost 4/5 AAV oh ya and I've acquired Kevin Hayes he needs 7 at minimum now cause you know we spoiled and over paid Marner. It's exhausting arguing over 750 000 AAV which literally affects nothing else that was proposed in the ACGM.

My overall point was I just don’t think there’s much of a chance that Marner signs before the first. If I’m his agent I’m saying 11x5 or I’m listening to offers. Again, I recognize the possibility that they circle back and the offer sheets aren’t really and he gets 5x9.75 or whatever. His biggest negotiating tactic right now is just saying, let’s talk on the first unless you give me what I want.

Maybe it's July 1st, my point is by the 30th the Marners camp will have a clear idea if an offer sheet worth signing is coming or not. If it is then so be it as the Leafs GM I have a deal worked out for a trade that suits my needs not the players or let him sign it even the compensation at 2 1st a 2nd and a 3rd is a solid return and the Leafs now have 10 million to spend how they please. But if I'm Marner I'd be looking beyond my playing career, he could end up in the dessert or on the Panthers and in 17/20 years when he's 35/40 there is no one paying him for appearances or Autograph signings or commercials or any endorsement of any sort. He will be forgotten in the desolate hockey towns. In T.O he'd be getting paid till he's 80 just to be around

On June 26th if I’m marners agent I’m calling Dubas and telling him they’re talking to multiple teams about a 12 million dollar offer sheet no matter what

And if I'm Dubas I call his bluff, if it's true then as Dubus I take the 4. 1st

If I'm Dubas, that's what I do, too. I'm hoping he has the stones to call that bluff. If he doesn't get this Marner deal right, then I think he'll have a tough go going forward with whoever comes up next. I give him a B on Nylander, and a C on AM (really didn't have much leverage on that one) but it'll be an F on Marner if he gets taken to the cleaners.. and it'll set all sorts of bad precedent, imo

Other GMs would be wise to low ball the offer sheet conversation, Marners deal will set the tone for all other RFA's, so if he gets a 11/12 X5/6 offer sheet and signs it, Rantanen is now asking the same/ Tkachuck in Calgary and so on and so on,not 1 note able RFA will sign until Marner

yep. it's a heck of a game of chicken going on right now league wide. At a certain point gms will start to push back. i for one, hope that happens in Toronto first. getting a little tired of hearing what these kids are worth...

Less about what they are worth and more about what they "want" or their commission paid agent wants. The whole point of this ACGM was to not argue about Marners value (it's why I left a million in space) I was actually more curious on the stop gap defence I traded for rather than move a ton of salary to spend it on 1 RHD that would supposedly solve all the Leafs problems

That's very true on the difference between "worth and want" and when you frame it up like that, then the only place to land is that this negotiating process is being driven by greed and ego.. the players, the parents, the agents. That's fine.. but if they keep taking that tact, eventually people start tuning out. And they will. Marner's game of chicken could very well turn him into the one of the most hated leafs of all time..

I hear ya on Marner's contract hijacking the purpose of your post.. he's kinda hijacking everything that concerns the team right now. So, my apologies on taking it off track.

That said, and taking it back to the purpose of your AGM, even though the leafs need help on the right side d, I doubt very much that one rhd unicorn fixes their problems. My take is that alot of their problems could be solved with Marleau, Hainsey, Z, Brown on the way out, and Hyman starting the season with an injury. That's not a dig at those players, but more an assessment of how Babcock makes decisions based on his favourites and forcing roles onto to guys that don't fit. I think it'll be good for the leafs, and Babcocks ego, to start the season with a bunch of openings and opportunities for guys that want to crack the roster and really be part of the team..
