Description
It stung but can we put the ROR trade to rest once and for all now? The return sucks to this point. No question about it. Berglund walked away and Sobotka and Thompson were flat out bad last season. Tage could still be a useful player and if Dallas wins in OT in Game 7, we have the #16-19 pick in fairly good draft by all accounts. Things happen. We got a lot of cap room this year and next to keep our younger core together and maybe Dahlin, Eichel and UPL will lead this team to championships. Now, since I've decided to remain optimistic, cue the Buffalo fans laying into me in the comments.

It was a huge gamble that unfortunately for you guys didn't go your way.

Different story if the season ended on January 1st.

The O'Reilly trade was a win for St. Louis, no question. However, Tage Thompson can still be a good player and you have the 31st overall pick, and a 2nd 2 years from now. The future is bright in Buffalo, the core of Eichel, Skinner, Reinhart, Ristolainen and Dahlin is quite strong. Also have lots of good prospects like Nylander, Mittlesdast, UPL, and whoever you get with the 7th overall pick

Also if St.Louis lost to Dallas, Anaheim would have received the Blues pick, and Buffalo would get the Sharks, as a result of the Montour trade

Everyone was talking lottery pick / top 10 protection when this trade happened...and frankly...it wasn't even really ROR that was the piece that turned it all around. ROR was on the team when they were terrible. STL found a goalie that just played outside his mind. That elevated everyone's confidence/game. Thomas coming into his own helps a lot too.

Ya the ROR return was not good at all. But he basically stated that he didn't want to play in Buffalo anymore so Botts had to move him. JB should have waited until TDL when more teams would have been interested and the return would have been more fair. Tage isn't looking great, maybe a bottom 6 forward at this point. The rest of the return is pretty terrible. At least Berglund and his 4 mil for 4 years decided to yeet out of the NHL. In hindsight (and foresight) a fair return from my perspective would have been:

St. Louis Blues
O'Reilly

Buffalo Sabres
Sobadka
Berglund
Robert Thomas/Jordan Kyrou
Ivan Barbashev/Oskar Sundqvist
2019 1st
2021 2nd

they would have gotten it if it was in the 20s. if it stayed in the teens, buffalo would have kept it.

Good to see some optimisim in these posts for once. True the ROR trade hasnt worked out thus far. But if you package up the Skinner and ROR deals then we basically got Skinner for ROR. Luck hasnt been on our side of late even with the draft lottery. But correct - a stack of cap space, Skinner returning, new coach. No one is going to hand us a cup, The only thing the vexes me was Housley staying the whole season.
