Why would you want to trade Butcher and an early 2nd for Martinez??

Butcher is one dimensional. Just a pure PP guy. I think he suits LA better because they need a QB on the back end. And Martinez can be a top 2 guy for us, plus he has term on a very fair contract. Also, I believe Ty Smith can replace butchers role and is a way better skater. So I’d rather have money going toward Martinez and have smith fill the PP role than pay butcher for only playing 18 minutes a night and not really a shutdown guy

But Martinez is old already, not like NJ is gonna be contenders next season so why give up young talent like Butcher.

He’s gonna be 32 not 36/37. And I’m giving up butcher because he’s gonna take ice time from other players that can produce more and will produce more hence Ty Smith. Devils big problem last year was defending and Martinez is a huge upgrade over butcher in that regard

You’re obviously not a Devils fan because Butcher isn’t that awful. He’s a great powerplay guy but he can still get better as he’s 24. He’s not awful defensively but switches with defensive partners constantly. Devils lose this trade 1000 times.

I agree with both of you to a degree. Butcher is expendable......but not for Martinez

awfull trade for jersey with the kings, switch sevs for Vat and the jets is fine if not we just get barely better for picks.

Vat has one year left, i dont think they'd accept that. Severson i thought would get it done.

so you want Smith, Butcher, Greene (guys all under 6 feet) along with Davies coming up and Reilly Walsh, who are also under 6 feet...you want them all to play? we have no significant size on D!

I totally get that Butcher is a great player. But he's a great player offensively, specifically on the PP. Have you watched the games this year?! He gets outmuscled and pushed around too much in our own zone. Tell me straight up, you think Butcher is a better player than Martinez? Cuz if so, then I'll stop, but imo MArtinez is waayyyy better all around compared to Will. We have so many Will Butcher types in the system, they can't all play!

If trading Butcher is on mind we might as well go for Trouba then. Definitely not Martinez.
