Trouba offer sheet question

Created by: DarthCharger
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 13, 2019

Description
I thought i saw someone comment about Trouba accepting a lower offer sheet from Det and then telling Winnipeg he won't sign anywhere else and not trade him.
what are the rules on this? can he resign 8 or just 7 if it worked? Does it matter?

Could they do a side deal to even in out even?
1st and 3rd are close to what Winnipeg would want.
Add a Dman prospect not named Hronek?

That would be kinda dumb for Detroit. Giving two picks for a guy who could walk at UFA in a year. The way the Wings improve is keep their picks and spend their money on a UFA...like Trouba in 2020.
This obsession that Trouba HAS to be traded. (in so many posts) Why?

I doubt Trouba makes it to the Offer-sheet stage. I assume a trade will happen before then. Frankly, I don't see it happening in Detroit. The two teams don't line up very well, in terms of what Winnipeg will want, and what Detroit will offer.

Teams can request to speak with Trouba before making a trade, but unless Winnipeg allows them to, they can't... I don't see any reason why Winnipeg would not want that to happen.

Because he in not on a multi year contract, IMO the rules are Trouba and the Wings could not even discuss an extension till January. Of course the closer a player gets to being a UFA, he has less reason to resign. He can wait till June and explore 31 options.

Trouba can tell the Jets he won't re-sign a long term deal with anyone but Detroit. That's his right. The Jets can trade him anyways. But no other GM will pay the Jets ask unless they know there is a possibility of him re-signing. Otherwise they will only pay the 1 year rental price. That's what Jets fans don't get.

If you mean that he can get traded for the 1 year rental price and then re-sign later in the year (Jan). Yes, he can do that too.

The Jets own his RFA rights (provided they tender him a 1 year contract at 5.5M by 5pm on June 25th). So they can match any offer sheet Trouba signs (he can only sign it after noon on July 1st then the Jets have 7 days to match. They then can't trade him for 1 year--he will hit UFA before that year is up). In the meantime between June 25th and July 1st the Jets can trade him or take him to arbitration (he then gets to decide on a 1 year term making him an UFA in July 2020).

If they don't take him to arbitration, between the tender offer and July 1st. His agent can negotiate offer sheets--because the Jets can match those will only be for 1 year (and are basically a hedge against the 2016 situation where he faced a Dec 1st deadline to sign or not play).

Winnipeg would jump at the chance of a sign-and-trade deal as it maximizes their return. It would also be dumb on Trouba's part as it limits his market (and thus his value) to only teams that can afford the Jets ask and fit him under their cap vs negotiating with the whole league after the salary cap rises in July 2020.

I don't see any reason why Winnipeg would not want that to happen: How about, "No, I am not interested in signing a long-term extension at this time and plan to explore UFA in July 2020."

That one sentence would cost the Jets enough they might refuse to let other teams talk to him.

Except for the fact that he was quoted just this morning, in The Athletic (Craig Custance) that he would be willing to sign an extension with a trade destination.... sooooo

What was the exact quote and was it just to certain teams? (paywall limited) The limited part I see is that it was a sunny Friday afternoon...today was Thursday and was rainy all day in Farmington Hills, MI. So has this been going on a week already?

It wasn't anything too telling... Just that he I just hoping to get it resolved soon, and would be open to signing an extension. (My free trial expired this afternoon lol)

Basically the typical Trouba stuff... Short sentences, saying nothing.

I posted something recently on this topic as sort of a "screw you" to Winnipeg from Trouba, but it was just as a joke and something that I thought would be funny. Was this it?

https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1206003

If it is, basically the way it works is that if Trouba signs an offer sheet and Winnipeg matches it, the CBA states that Winnipeg would then not be allowed to trade him for a full calendar year. Basically saying to either let him walk now for the compensation of the offer sheet, of they risk not being able to get anything for him. So I suggested that he sign with Detroit for $6,341,152M, which is this highest limit for compensation of a 1st and 3rd round picks. This is below market value for a top 4 right handed d-man of Trouba's age. So Winnipeg either takes the 1st and 3rd, or he walks next summer and they get nothing. Or if Winnipeg doesn't match the offer sheet, Detroit gets him below market value and he can then sign an extension when he's eligible.

It's a similar situation to when Shea Weber signed an offer sheet with Philly. Nashville matched and weren't allowed to trade him for a full year even without a NTC.

That's exactly what I've been saying Trouba should do.

The only issue I see is that the Jets could take him to arbitration (which means no offer sheet). Trouba chooses a 1 year term. They settle or an award is accepted. Then the Jets have more time to work out a trade. But with each day the 1 year rental return becomes less and less in this scenario. The Jets then chose to pull a Columbus and keep him accepting they will get nothing when he becomes an UFA. That's how I see it playing out. But they would loose players like Myers due to the cap this way. So I can see them swinging a trade deadline deal for a low 1st for him too.

I wouldn't put too much stock in saying that he would be open to an extension with a trade. I think he really wants out of Winnipeg because he can't stand management there. I think he's open to the possibility not necessarily going to do it.

The only way I could see Red Wings getting Trouba is through a trade. Letting go of next years 1st and 3rd would be a huge mistake especially no that we are still in a rebuild by the time Red Wings will be good Trouba will quite possibly be out of his prime. I understand the desire to have another Michigan boy on the team, but I personally don't want him for what we would have to give. If you could help the Jets cap issue by taking Kulikov and trouba for cheap then ya sure, but I can't see it happening unless Stevie Y does one of his amazing trades like he's done in the past.

I'm assuming you don't live in Winnipeg?? If you did you would 100% understand why everyone wants Trouba to go. I quoted your comment on a more recent thread and went more in depth on why.
