Keeping Trouba as a Rental

Description
Jets decide the offers aren't there for Trouba so we keep him with an arbitration award.

Roslovic moves into Tanev's minutes but has more offense but the same speed. He moves up to the top 6 if poor performance or injuries.

4th line of grinders playing 4th line minutes. Vesalainen is first call up.

After the season Trouba walks as a free agent but the expansion draft will allow us to backfill a top 4 RHD with a trade from someone with too many D to protect (Carolina, Phili, Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado,Columbus, Tampa.) Or we deal with Seattle for one of their excess that they draft.

We fix our 2C problem be reuniting Little Wheeler and let the Ehlers Scheif Laine era start as the top line.

IMO not a bad way forward if we don't get our price for Trouba.

I think this is probably where things are going. I think you’re about .5 million light on Connor, Copp and Trouba. So I think the Jets will have to trade Kulikov even if it costs a 5th round pick to save that 1.4 million so they could sign another 4th line centre like Par Lindholm.

The Seattle draft isn't for two years. But as you suggest, Jets will be stronger with Trouba for his last Jet season.

Holding on to Trouba makes absolutely zero sense, The Jets aren't cup contenders yet. They wont go any further then they did this year. Trouba wants out and i doubt he'd stay in Winnipeg this year. His agent pretty much said he's done in Winnipeg. Trouba for one arbitrary year will get closer to $7 million after putting up 50 points this past season. No way he's taking a one year deal at $6 million per.

The Jets are absolutely cup contenders right now. They went to the Western Conference final 2 years ago and got bounced by the Stanley cup champs in the first round this year where we choked away 2 third period leads in a 6 game series. We should have won if we just could have closed out game 1 and 5.

Trouba has no choice on if he'd stay in Winnipeg this year. He's an RFA. If he doesn't elect arbitration the Jets will. The arbitrator can award another 1 year contract and then he'll be a UFA at the end, or he can go play in Europe for 3 years until he turns 27 and can be a UFA then. If he doesn't show up the Jets toll the contract and he's in Winnipeg next year. The arbitration award will look at his performance compared to other RFAs. It will at a minimum be a consideration. Here are D that have scored around the same points as Trouba last year with a cap hit under $6M. Reilly $5 (from his draft year), Gustafsson, Barrie ($5.5), Josi ($4), Chabot, Krug ($5.25), Jones ($5.4), McDonagh ($4.7), Kilingberg ($4.25), Ekholm ($3.75), Ekman-Larsson ($5.5). I don't see him getting awarded $7, but in the mock I have $2M in space so I could absorb a higher award if that's what happened.

Gotta think the Jets are Cup contenders, but like the other divisions there are three good teams in there's...Preds, Blues and Jets, so even to get to to Conference Final is iffy. Believe the rule of arbitration are the "side" that demand arbitration get it, but the other side can determine if it's one or two years. So no way Trouba requests arbitration because he doesn't want to be a Jet for to years. That's my interpretation. At worse for Trouba he is Jet for one year regardless of what the price is 5.5m to 7m. as you suggest. I appreciate the fact that Trouba wants out, but he when he signed his first NHL contract he knew the Jets had control of him for 7 years. If he didn't want to married to one team for seven years, he could have gone the Vesey route.

Yeah Winnipeg is definitely a worthy cup contending team, Not sure why i said they weren't. Just hard to win a cup now and days. Need elite goaltending and a solid defense. Just not sure they're there just yet.
