Huge W for the Pens. Kahun almost hit 40 pts on his rookie season.

I loved Maatta (my first hockey crush) however I think Kahun is a great (and cheap) addition to the team. Like we have a sweetner with the 5th too.

Hawks get a top 4 defenseman for a 40 point winger and a 5th round pick. I like this trade for the Hawks

I like this deal for Pittsburgh. Save a good chunk of change and get a pretty intriguing young forward.

While it's sad to see Olli go, the Pens got the better value in the trade. They managed to free up a good bit of cap space, and got a young, scoring winger with lots of upside. #ThankYouOlli for your time as a Penguin, and good luck in Chicago.

Pens got surprisingly more for Mattaa than I thought. This works good for them.

I'm also wondering if this trade implies that the Pens could be going after someone in free agency?

They needed to clear cap and roster spots on defense.

This is like waking up on Christmas morning!!! Cap Space, a near 40 point scorer (in his rookie season) PLUS a 5th round pick in this years deep draft! Love it! Thanks Maatta for helping us earn more Cups but it's time to move on. Enjoy!

I kno how all the Hockey geniuses on here crush Maatta bc of his speed only but the kid is a really good D-man and is def a top 4 type.

Pros on Maatta - Very good break out pass / very good in own zone / has some offensive ability / always in good position / good PK guy / plays #2 PP

cons Maatta - He is slow / needs to be more physical

Don't like this one for the Pens. They already have weak defensive depth and plenty of mediocre wingers.

as much as I like Kahun. Maata is highly underrated and improves the Blackhawks significantly

You're correct about that. The Pens now have room to resign Pettersson and hopefully promote him to the top 4.

Yeah, Pettersson will probably play top 4 next season.

He improves your defense if your looking to slow it down to snails pace and mis mark players around the net front. Enjoy!

The Hawks are the 2nd worst team on defense after Ottawa so anything will improve for them.

I hate this trade as a CHI fan. I was never impressed with Maatta and every pens game I did see people would fly by him like he was nothing.

Kahun is more adjusted for the modern game and specifically the penguins game. He is always moving, can stop on a dime, and has a deceptive shot he will most certainly be a 40 point or more player for the penguins. Oh and they get a pick.

Penguins get a W while CHI takes a fat L. At least we know we’re drafting a forward...

A.) Value of the trade from the Hawks perspective is subpar. It's not a complete rip off, but Kahun is SOLID, $3M less, and an RFA. I'll admit that he's got max bonuses which shouldn't be lost either. So cap management will still need to be a factor going forward for JR, but he was a rookie last year and very noticeable. At least get the pick coming back!

B.) Maatta himself I don't think is that good, but I 100% get that the Hawks needed a player that has Maatta type qualities. Defensive Dman on the left side. But truthfully, the only reason Maatta's a defensive Dman is because he's SOO slow and the game is just getting faster. He came into the league as a scoring Dman. But then wasn't scoring. It just feels like no one really knows what type of player Maatta is. Not JR not Sullivan so they shipped him out and he's now Bowman's problem. I mean, just look at the vote section of the PIT article below.

https://www.pensburgh.com/2019/6/10/18659694/2018-19-penguins-season-in-review-olli-maatta-pittsburgh-future-rumors-pens

C.) It's 1 year too long. So Let's pretend that Maatta does turn it around...Seattle's just going to take him. EVEN if BOTH Keith and Seabs aren't with the Hawks...Gus, Joki, Murphy...they'll all be protected first. I know this team will have more trades before Seattle's expansion, but they just gave up a SOLID forward for someone they might lose for nothing...as a best case. Worst case, they're stuck with him.

Maatta really is not that great, while Kahun is cheaper and I think will be the better option long term. Pens doing a good job getting young and filling out depth spots. Also think this confirms that Chicago will draft someone like Turcotte rather than Byram.

A lot of Pens fans are bi-polar (not all of course).

When I was suggesting Lehkonen or Hudon + 2nd for Maata 3 months ago, I was crazy because he was "a top 3 defenceman worth a top 6 foward".

Now, they are just happy to clear cap space...
