Honestly, I don't understand this deal for the Hawks. An excellent forward and a late pick for a "top four defenseman". IMO Kahun's value is much higher than Maata. Plus, the Hawks lose cap space.

A.) Value of the trade from the Hawks perspective is subpar. It's not a complete rip off, but Kahun is SOLID, $3M less, and an RFA. I'll admit that he's got max bonuses which shouldn't be lost either. So cap management will still need to be a factor going forward for JR, but he was a rookie last year and very noticeable. At least get the pick coming back!

B.) Maatta himself I don't think is that good, but I 100% get that the Hawks needed a player that has Maatta type qualities. Defensive Dman on the left side. But truthfully, the only reason Maatta's a defensive Dman is because he's SOO slow and the game is just getting faster. He came into the league as a scoring Dman. But then wasn't scoring. It just feels like no one really knows what type of player Maatta is. Not JR not Sullivan so they shipped him out and he's now Bowman's problem. I mean, just look at the vote section of the PIT article below.

https://www.pensburgh.com/2019/6/10/18659694/2018-19-penguins-season-in-review-olli-maatta-pittsburgh-future-rumors-pens

C.) It's 1 year too long. So Let's pretend that Maatta does turn it around...Seattle's just going to take him. EVEN if BOTH Keith and Seabs aren't with the Hawks...Gus, Joki, Murphy...they'll all be protected first. I know this team will have more trades before Seattle's expansion, but they just gave up a SOLID forward for someone they might lose for nothing...as a best case. Worst case, they're stuck with him.

And thanks for explaining what we in Pittsburgh already know. Good luck with Maatta.

Olli Maatta can perform up to Top 4 par, I don't see Kahun doing anything apart of the lineup.

No I mean even if Kahun performs well if you look at his contract there’s a contract bonus that I’m sure no one really knows the details of..... its like a 2.85m performance bonus

You're correct about that. The Pens now have room to resign Pettersson and hopefully promote him to the top 4.

You want to make a guy that couldn't get 13 minutes ev time on Anaheim, and got ejected in a trade, a top 4 on the Pens the next season? He was getting less even ice time than Gudbranson and Johnson, even through March. Pettersson has a lot to prove before getting top 4 type ice time.

Based on Kahun's playing partners I'd say he is due a bit of regression in PIT should he not be teamed with top line talent. Matta has been hampered by multiple injuries in the last few years and could grow back into the D Man he was 2 years ago if his health holds up and is given the right setting. I'd say it was a push.

I think PIT should make a major play for UFA Mats Zuccarello this summer. He's been extremely undervalued, in my opinion. He would be an excellent fit in the Pens top 6 and probably wouldn't cost much more than what Jordan Eberle just signed for ($5.5M AAV). I can also see them going after a D, but that would probably have to come via trade.

I think they are going after Jacob Trouba in a trade & sign and then locking him down longterm. Since Winnipeg is going to loose him anyways they will try to get as much as they can for him and I'd offer them Jack Johnson, Erik Gudbranson, Dominik Simon and a 5th round pick. If they don't take it they will loose him anyways because he's not going to sign there again.

Instead of drafting a young, LHD they traded for Maatta...maybe he'll revitalize his career and playing with a fellow Fin in Henri Joki (not going to attempt to spell the rest) will help out both. But they would have been better drafting Byram

It's the Hawks. Trust me, St. Louis didn't bail out the Pens.

He could make up to $2.85m "IF" he hits all bonuses THAT is a big IF .. BUT there is a cushion of 7.5% of the upper cap limit for performance bonuses.

No Thanks... PENS have ZERO need for 30+ players, We have enough Vets- Pens moves will all be going after players 28 and younger only and getting rid of ....
1- J. Johnson
2- Kessel - (dont believe what GMJR said
3- 1 of either goalie - Desmith or Jarry
4- Maybe Schultzy but only if we get back a #2 RHD

im not that familiar with Kahun, but on paper it seems like a relatively fair deal to me with maybe a slight advantage for chicago.
