Soooo Risky! 11.5M is a lot and for 8years... If he can stay healthy might be good, but for now it's a bad contract

Best Defenseman in the league.......

........ When healthy

Risky contract. It's one of those high risk - high reward contract. That said, I personally wouldn't have done it.

With a healthy Karlsson they could have won the Cup. No one else has 2 Norris trophy defensemen in their lineup.

Knowing that the Sharks are in win-now mode, would you as SJ's GM really pass on this guy because the deal is a bit too long???

Wilson wanted to make sure that SJ won that EK trade with OTT by re-signing him. Giving a load of future assets for one year of TOP3 D in the world would've hurt them. But that's not going to be an issue anymore. That's what I think anyway.

The issue is now whether they can keep other main pieces of the roster.

Wow! EK will soon become the 3rd highest paid player in the league and the highest paid D. This term and AAV would be a given had he not been injured for much of the last 3 seasons. Big risk/reward contract here. They still need to extend Pavelski, Meier, and Labanc. Jumbo is another question mark. Meier alone will likely cost $6M+ AAV. It's gonna be tight.

The Sharks now have 26.5 million tied up in 3 defensemen who average age 32 and are signed for at least 6 more seasons.

Eeeekkkksssss buy out proof with signing bonuses paid out each year and a full no movement clause for the 8 years. High cap hit and way to much term for a guy who is always injured. Sharks are going to pay for this contract 3/4 years down the road.... lol and I love it makes it much easier for my Jets to compete in the Western Conference long term smile

If Karlsson was healthy he could get McDavid money July 1.

The issue now becomes: How expensive will Timo Meirer and Joe Pavelski be? Their numbers will be high.

I'm in the minority here in the fact that I like the deal for San Jose. Ideally they could've gotten the AAV a little lower, but we all knew it was going to be 8 years if he came back to San Jose. Plus we saw just how impactful EK was for them playing at about 60%, so what happens when he takes the time to heal up properly? That's a Cup contending team. I know it's going to result in a shuffling of the forward group, but it's clear that Karlsson's impact on the team when healthy is extraordinary.

Yes, they're going to be in trouble in the long haul. But the Sharks want this window to be open as long as possible. Having two of the best defensemen in the world locked up for the rest of their prime years is going to be huge for them. It's easier to find forwards than it is defenseman, and EK is truly one of a kind. If you can lock him up, do it. I like it for the Sharks.

The AAV shouldn't come as much of a shock. The term is the head scratcher.

Indeed. I'd consider signing Meier first just to minimize the risk of offer sheet, and then Pavelski after that if there's money left.

Guy deserves it both, money and term. GL EK

At his 36 he will be still better then 85% of Ds in the League.

Only if he's healthy. He could hardly skate in STL series. He was also hurt most of last season w/ OTT. No D in the league has close to his offensive abilities when he's close to 100% though.

Even letting Jumbo Joe, Pavelski, Donskoi, and Nyquist walk. After signing Meier and Labanc they're dangerously close to the cap with all those holes to fill.
I have no idea how they plan to make this work to remain competitive next year.

Meier could be well over $7M AAV. He scored 30 goals and 66 points. Kane scored 30 goals, but only 56 points. Meier also brings an element of physicality that most young players don't have. He's very valuable to the Sharks future.
