Someone has to be on their way out, right?

Justin Braun probably gets traded to clear some additional space. He'd be a good, cheap pickup for a team like Toronto that needs help on their right side. I'm not familiar enough with the Sharks system to know who could replace him though.

Erik Karlsson is so good that signing him is a victory, and the term and money are irrelevant.

Oh yeah, I figured Braun leaving is almost a guarantee at this point. I was thinking maybe someone else, but looking at their roster, it's not like they have many guys that are overpaid or anything.

With a healthy Karlsson they could have won the Cup. No one else has 2 Norris trophy defensemen in their lineup.

Knowing that the Sharks are in win-now mode, would you as SJ's GM really pass on this guy because the deal is a bit too long???

To be real honest that's a bad deal considering his injury history.

Whether it's a good signing or not, the "Erik Karlsson thing" that's been going on since late 2017 is FINALLY done.

They will have 2 two-time norris trophy winners by the start of next season and still suck...

You want to bet on that?

Guy deserves it both, money and term. GL EK

At his 36 he will be still better then 85% of Ds in the League.

That’s a bold prediction... this is a bad signing for the Sharks. Maybe a younger team it would have been okay.

Sharks will have 35m tied up in 4 guys 30+ who are signed for atleast another 7 years. Yikes!!!

$11.5 x 8 for a defenseman who's not good at defence, and is only going to get worse, and injured more often? ?
Add that to Burns, another defenseman who's not good at defence, and you have a match made in hell.

You now have only $12.5 million to sign your players, including Labanc, Meier and Pavelski. Good luck.

I guess the Sharks will have to worry about the back end of this deal when it happens. And if i'm not mistaken, a player can wave the NTC if they chose? I don't see that as a big deal. When a player reaches an elite level, shouldn't they have control over where they play?

Being "not good at defense" is more than outweighed by all the puck possession and offensive production that they both contribute to.

91 NO votes to 12 YES votes at this point. Do you think this tells you anything San Jose GM??? WAY too long of term at that Cap hit and while he's really good he is NOT 11.5 million a year good. Sad to say but the Sharks got bite on this deal.

This is the worst contract of all the 10+ AAV contracts by far :

Kane, Towes, Tavares, McDavid, Doughty, and Matthews

Contract is good in the short term 2-3 years. After that, the contract will be terrible value. Gotta give it to the Sharks who want to win now, but we are going to see some tough times in the cap salary world of the Sharks.

So they win the trade now, but may now lose long term. I was predicting $10.5M for 7 so this isn’t that far in excess. SJ gave him the 8th year (something no other team can offer of course) to make it happen. Given Karlsson’s recent injury issues, I don’t know if 6 or 7y vs 8y will make much difference. Were it any other player even 4y could be risky as hell. He could rebound and continue to be an elite D-Man for years to come and this may not look too bad.

But between Burns, Vlasic, and Karlsson, this blueline is going to be grey (and expensive) for a long time. So in the larger picture of where this team is at, it’s a terrible deal.

When the average fan knows it's too long, you know the shift for signing older players to these long term deals isn't far away.
This was a mistake, plain and simple.

It’s all up to Karlsson and that Training staff.. if he can stay healthy and keep his workouts and stretches in constant then this will be a great deal. At 100% he’s the best in the game.

The term isn't a shock either. Everyone he was going to get max term, regardless of it was 7 or 8 years, and that the contract was going to be huge and likely not team-friendly.

I'm not surprised in the sense that Karlsson got max term. I'm just surprised that he got the $$$ and the term, especially from SJS. How are they gonna pay for Meier and Pavelski now?
