I had a strong feeling he was going to the NYC area. At the end of the day, NYR had the best return for WPG. Devils don't have a young roster top 6 D and Ty Smith is probably still 1-2 years away from NHL ready.
NEW YORK: "Who do you want Chev?" WINNIPEG: "We'll take Pionk for Trouba" TORONTO: "Do you want Brown for Laine?" WINNIPEG: "F*** no ... you can have Connor" EDMONTON: "Hay fellas ... any interest in Lucic?"
I really wanted Trouba for many times in trades... This seems like they barely gave up anything for their best D-man... I guess long as it works out better than Shattenkirk signing... Jets will be lucky to make playoffs with all the horrible moves that team is doing lately .
2020 Hindsight: this trade was an absolute steal for the Winnipeg Jets. They got a 45 point defenceman (Neal Pionk) and one of arguably the best prospect defenceman in the NHL (Ville Heinola), and the Rangers got a defenceman who got 27 points, thats not bad until you see he is making $8,000,000 UNTIL 2026. So the Jets won this trade (as of 2020) by a mile.

Not to mention that the Jets wouldn’t even have been able to keep Trouba for more than a year.
Just Poink for what was going to be one year of Trouba was a good trade for the Jets. The growth of Poink made a win for Winnipeg. Where the Rangers failed was signing that overpaid contract for Trouba.
No way he should be paid as a top ten Dman in the league
