Minimal rebuild

Description
Despite years of terrible drafting I don't think the OIlers are as far from being competitive as some do. This is my go at suggesting a minimal rebuild. My points are:

1. You build a good team around C and the Oil finally have C - probably the best 1-2-3 combination in the league. Its tempting to trade Nuge or Draisaitl, but remember how effective Pit was in 2009 with 3 elite C. McDavid is a generational 1C, Nuge is a good 2C and Draisaitl is probably a 1/2C who, like Staal, can jump on the wing when needed.

2. With those 3C you shouldn't need elite wingers - Pit never has. Hence Hall, due to his high trade value, is expendable.

3. What you do need is forward depth, and Edmonton (due to terrible drafting) doesn't have this. My focus has been on increasing forward depth - adding Boedker and Tkachuk, and trading for a couple of promising young depth forwards (Ritchie, Arvidsson). I've left the depth players in the lineup below for you to judge.

4. I don't think the D is as terrible as has been made out - when you don't have forward depth your D simply get hung out to dry. Pit just won with an average D group tailored perfectly to fit the team. I really like Klefbom, Nurse and Davidson moving forward although all 3 will still need a couple years to get to a high level. The Oil simply have to be patient.

5. I don't think Talbot is the answer in net unfortunately. I've traded for Andersen (as opposed to Fleury) because he's young and this team is a couple years away from being a serious contender. Talbot's salary is going to be a problem.

6. In trading Hall (to the Ducks who'd love an elite LW) I've brought in a very good LW prospect, a desperately needed RH puckmoving D and a big G upgrade.

7. This team still doesn't have a 1D, but I don't like their chances of finding one this year. Nurse and Klefbom have that kind of potential though.

8. I didn't trade Yakupov - he's too high risk / low reward now. The Oil wouldn't get much for him and although he looks like a bust, you never know. Trading him for a depth player and then watching him score 30 goals elsewhere would be a disaster - I say give him a chance with McDavid, and send him to the KHL if he fails. The Oil have missed their chance to get a good return for him.

9. I didn't trade Eberle - his trade value probably isn't as high as his value as the teams best winger (if Hall is traded of course).

10. Last, I kept the 4th and used it on Tkachuk who's probably the best player avaiable at 4. In a couple years he steps in on low salary and scores 25 goals.

I don't think this is a cup winning team yet, but they have lots of potential and should stand a chance of grabbing a wildcard spot and getting some playoff experience.
