Dont Call it a Comeback

Created by: Boush
Team: 2019-20 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 18, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just some old school player swaps for a new look third line with the wingers almost certainly leaving the team as it is.

Caps get a bit more offense and faceoff certainty in Perreault, Jets get some cap relief over the next two years and a little roster certainty beyond that. The Caps can also expose Matty P in the expansion draft and not feel as bad since he will only have a year left at that point.

Toronto gets a quality D prospect that should make the NHL jump this season or next and cap space, Caps again get some offensive potential for the third line.

And as always with my teams, Anaheim gets a backup and Samsonov gets NHL action.

a) I think you're super close on Vrana's deal.
b) I like the idea of Connor Brown as a Connolly replacement. But the cost may be a little high. Lucas Jo will be a really good player...I think TOR would deal Brown for a 3rd rounder.
c) Eller > MattyP no apologies there but MP85 did not morph into a 3rd line 2 two center and penalty killer in his time in DC or WPG. Eller at his current deal is good for the Caps.
d) Djoos at or below $1M/yr...I think any more and he is over paid.
e) AJF as the 13th forward for development...love that idea!

Matty P, with the exception of this past year, has always outperformed Eller. He is a better center, more talented offensively, and was arguably the Caps best 3C over the past decade. He had greater success when called into the top 6 than Eller did, too. Numbers don't lie. Eller plays a lot on the PK - doesn't mean he is any good at it. In fact, the stats show that he is likely a pretty lousy penalty killer. I know most Caps fans loooove them some Eller, but he is my #1 trade -away target now that Niskanen is gone. He has some value, but does not provide what the Caps need at this point: offense. Dowd and Hagelin should take over primary PK duties next year, so that is not the main concern.

Lars Eller scored the Stanley Cup clinching goal so he could skate around with his jock strap on his head for all I care and he is still a God to me. Matty P, not so much. Thank you drive through.

Wasn't the point of re-signing Copley to expose him in the expansion draft? Why trade away?
