This is the price you have to pay for a 2nd line center. It is probably a year or two too long and about 500k-750k too much, but it's better than the front office sitting on their hands waiting for the prospects to grow and become relevant. This team has a window now and this signing improves their chances. If you spend too much time looking for the long term, you never look at the short term. Hayes is a solid all-around player that will slot in well alongside players like Jake Voracek, Oskar Lindblom, and James vanRiemsdyk. No Flyer fan is going to loose sleep over this contract if he helps us go deep into the playoffs.

Glad the Rangers didn't fall for that abyss contract and parlayed it into Trouba. LOL

I still think the Skinner deal was the most egregious so far. At least Hayes is a C and pretty solid defensively. What I don't understand is that Couturier is the clear #1C. Patrick will, or at least should, be #2 in 1-2 years. Who pays over $7M for a 3rd line C? What're his numbers gonna look like in PHI? he's not gonna play #1PP. This is a bad deal for PHI.

Thank god Gorts didn't even entertain the idea of locking him up... oh my lord does Mika Zibanejad's contract not get talked about enough for being so great.

You may be right but all the over pays (Skinner Karlson Hayes) and term handed out it"ll be a tossup which one is the worst first. BTW I was watching Pegs games at the end of the reg. season and Hayes was playing 4th line.

Jesus Christ Fletcher This Guy scored 20 Goals once and you give him 7 M

This is exactly why you don't try to build a team through free agency. The Rangers paid him $5M+ last season. All the sudden he's worth almost 30% more? PhI is suddenly spending like the Sharks! Does Fletcher really think they're Cup contenders? They were terrible defensively last season.

Mika would be looking at an easy $8.5M right now.

They Evander Kane'd it, but it's so much worse. Total albatross by year 4, but could be earlier. This just cannot feasibly work out.

No "NMC" at least for PHI. This could easily end in a buyout situation.

While I do agree that it's better to attack now and get the guy that you think can put your team over the top, for a team sitting on Morgan Frost and with Nolan Patrick on the rise, I don't see where overpaying for a 2C makes a lot of sense. But this "window" you said that this team has is kinda blurry. You've got a stacked prospect pipeline and the best young goalie in the game with Hart. While Giroux and Jake aren't getting any younger, there are plenty of youngsters that are ready too take this team to the next level down the road. Being aggressive here is what ends up biting you in the ass when you need to dish out big contracts to the youngsters that are making the difference.

Yes, he's a great fit for them for the next few years. I expect the Flyers to make the playoffs next year. But at some point, you gotta let the kids play. Dallas learned that this year, and they let guys like Roope Hintz be the difference between one goal away from knocking out the eventual Cup champs and missing the playoffs altogether.

not only is this terrible on paper, it also stalls the development of Nolan Patrick and Morgan Frost (unless they move to wing). and they just drafted O’Brian, fwiw. no room for those guys to grow. what a bad move

This is exactly what happens when GM's get impatient and build through UFA's. They always pay a big premium. When you build through the draft you negotiate w/ RFA's. The difference is substantial. Look at the contracts of guys like MacKinnon, Gaudreau, Barkov, and Scheifele. All 4 are way below UFA numbers and in their early 20's. Compare to $6M+ UFA's like Kovalchuck, Skinner, and Lucic. All late 20's or much older in Kovalchuck's case.

Too bad he didn't score to end the biggest choke x4 in NHL history.

This is taking the cake as the Worst Signing so far since the Offseason has begun. I mean Karlsson was overpaid but at least he has stats to justify some of it but Hayes at $7,142,857 per season!!! I mean this is per season folks! AND for 7 seven straight of them. He's a 4-5 million guy and not a penny more. His stats don't justify it, his overall team production doesn't justify it and as a Penguins fan I absolutely LOVE it because Philly just made another bad move for the short term and longterm. 65 people to 4 people say this is a bad signing. How come these GM's are this far off. It's Kevin Hayes guys!

Kalrsson is a 2 time Norris winner, 4 time All-NHL 1st team and 4 time top 10 Hart Trophy voting. He played a whole season on one leg and dominated the Playoffs. He was not overpaid, he just got what he's worth

HAHAHA! He did it so he wouldn't be ridiculed by the fans and media if/when this deal turns bad! It's physiological for sure. $50M just has a different ring to it, right? It sounds more than one dollar more than his actual contract amount.
