The team that buys him out will get zero cap relief, so they will just keep him. I think a Marleau to Arizona deal is in the future

You're right, Leafs to Arizona makes sense. Arizona could buy him out (prearranged) and then San Jose signs him for 1m. Arizona if they have the cap, might want to do the buyout.

I don't know why so many folks think Dell to the Leafs is good for the Leafs? Dell has gotten worse and his stats last year were worse than Sparks.

Actually cap friendly is wrong about the buyout, it is a 5.4 million cap hit for 2019 and ,4 million for 2020.....and he isn't likely to accept the trade unless he gets the buyout and can go out West.....Toronto will just have to sweeten the deal even more to get the team who takes him to buy him out (retaining salary, adding Kapanen/Johnsson or draft picks)

Are you sure they are wrong??? An over 35 contract is different than a regular contract...

CapFriendly isn't wrong. 35+ contracts count against the salary cap in their entirety, regardless if the player retires, gets bought out, or goes on LTIR. The team that buys him out would still have his full $6.25M cap hit on the books.

A team could potentially buy him out to save on the cash owed to him since they'd only have to pay him two annual payments of $2.08M, but they would get zero cap relief.

Wrong, it is ALMOST the entirety of his contract because $417,000 was his base salary and it DOES NOT count towards the cap when he is bought out for 2019-20. It does however count in 2020-21.

His cap hit is 5.4 million in 2019 and .4 million in 2020...Sportrac has this as well as many articles has it as well. It is still almost all a cap hit, but not quite...
