not completely true... with no retention, he has negative value.. with retaining half, probably about a 2nd rounder and a conditional pick based off of production..

Say, at the draft, Shattenkirk@half for a 2nd in 2019 and a conditional 2nd in 2020 if he puts up 40+ points and plays in 60+ games

No. He had a knee injury his first season in NY. Last season he was still recovering and didnt get in shape in time. He slipped down the depth chart, and had a few performance and injury issues throughout the season.

He's still very similar to the player he was in St. Louis. But he's not surrounded by the talent he had there. Most Rangers fans never, or barely, saw him play hockey, other than highlights. That has been quite obvious since he arrived in NY. He can be a 2nd pair guy, if his partner is strong, with PP minutes (he's still effective, there). Or, a very good 3rd pair guy, sheltering him from fast/high scoring opponents.

Decent offensively, brutal defensively. Slightly high AAV but with short term left. Has experience in running a PP so there's some value there. Wouldn't say it's positive value, more likely neutral value. It's likely if the Rangers moved him it'd be for a mediocre prospect or for another player that could use a change of scenery. With how much good puck moving RHD are in demand, he wouldn't have negative value though and wouldn't be a cap dump

With the contract retained at 50% he still has good value. Especially with the contracts that are being dished out, he has value. They may need to take back a bad contract tho. Shatty definitely has a place on most teams in the league at only 3.3m per year.

I say let him play out the season and try to rehab his value and trade him at the deadline or at the draft next year.
