Description
"We all know what the CBA is. There is no gentleman's agreement. F--- that s---. When people say that, it's a lazy narrative, I'll tell you that. Really? Your ownership's competitive, GMs are competitive, and it's the buddy-buddy system? What the f--- is that? It doesn't mean something will or won't happen, but that's been the narrative for years, and I don't know why."

Why McNabb and not Miller? Seems you would need the RD over another lefty.

That's tough for the Preds because that's a whole lot to give up but... I think I'd do that if there was an understanding on Hall's extension.

While there might be a gentlemen's agreement regarding offer sheets, you have demostrated why so few are presented or signed. Likely a non playoff team is the only team with cap and do they want to risk lottery picks? In Marner's case does. he want to play for Jersey for 11.25 or remain a Leaf for 10.5? Imagine if Hirschier has a breakout year, does he warrant 9m and Josi wants a raise to stay.. Suddenly the Devils are against the cap with no first rounders. Signing Panarin or a UFA or next year and keeping the picks might be of more value to the Devils.

Yeah, I'm assuming extensions on both sides, forgot to write that in the notes.

The Devils actually have a lot of guys that play RD, the depth chart on here is a little wacky. Severson, Vatanen, Ty Smith, and Santini all play RD. Will Butcher played LD this season because we were so shallow at that position, but he also played RD in college and in his first year in the NHL played the right side, then got moved to the left – and had a down year.

Year 1 is definitely a gamble, and maybe this is a homer pick, but I think this squad would be a playoff team by year 2, or at least knocking on the door and have 5% odds – picking 12-15ish. But I've traded Taylor Hall here, so we won't win the lottery.

2020 1st: #1-10
2021 1st: #10-15
2022 1st: #20-25 – if this is a down year, Seattle also enters the NHL and the odds could change.
2023 1st: #32, haha

Definitely wishful thinking, but I'll trade an 11% chance at 1st overall for a 100% chance at Mitch Marner. It's really not the draft that bothers me about it, it's "what else could you acquire with 4 1st round picks?" – the sky is the limit there.

Totally agree, it's a risk – but I feel the Devils have a lot of good young pieces in place who will only get better. In year 2 of this scenario I clear $28m in cap space, not counting any potential cap increases. I also have Kyle Palmieri entering the last year of his deal at $4.5m – a great number if I need to trade him, and could potentially even fetch a 1st at the deadline to recoop some assets.
