Here's my opinion: Pesce for Ehlers is in Winnipeg's favour, Faulk for Ehlers is in Carolina's favour...so I figured Hamilton might be the middle point? I just can't see Winnipeg giving up Ehlers unless it is for a top pairing RHD which I don't think Faulk is.

For me it's Pesce of bust if you're moving Ehlers.

Ehlers + Pionk for Pesce + ?

Exactly, I don't think Winnipeg will be trading Ehlers unless it's for a top guy like Pesce. Which I realize from a Canes perspective probably won't happen, so that's why I am hoping we just retain Ehlers if we can't get him.

I wouldn't underestimate Hamilton's possession driving value. I would love to see Pesce, but I don't see Carolina moving him to anyone, for anything.

My problem with Hamilton is he's only under contract for 2 more years. So he could walk as a UFA the same offseason that Buff packs it in and suddenly the RD is decimated but we have all our forwards entering their prime at that same time. Pesce and his contract match up better with window and we have 4 more years where we can be confident we have our top pair locked down.

Hamilton is good. The length of his contract doesn't work for me if you're talking about a player as important as Ehlers. I need the cost certainty and I need the term. Without one or the other I'm not interested.

I agree... Though, he and Buff coming up at the same time gives the Jets some cap flexibility to bring Hamilton back... for a guy who will have played on 4 teams in 6 years at that point, I like the chances of them being able to retain him.... I just don't see the Canes trading Pesce for the very reason you outlined.
