maybe, but i do think there could be something there. Toronto is looking to shed cap, and have also shown interest in tanev, maybe change the sweetener, but i think something similar could happen

Tanev is hurt all the time. I get your retaining but you are sending back a nearly identical player to zaitsev with no pp or offensive upside who is going to play half the games... then throwing in our best forward prospect and a 3rd.

Toronto is clearly in the search for a shutdown d-man. Tanev is just that. Yes, usually he only plays 50 games or so per year, but I believe that a change of medical staff, as well as being able to play slightly more sheltered minutes in Toronto could push the needle to maybe 60-65 games. The retained salary is the big piece for toronto, and hey, maybe the 3rd becomes conditional on him playing 60 games, or re-signing with the team at the end of the year.

Zaitsev played all 82 games which is a huge bonus when you are thin on the right side. When tanev does go down we are in trouble.

To be honest I would rather trade for Biega and a pick/prospect for zaitsev alone.
