Wow, at first I thought 6 million was a very high AAV, but for 2 years this is a excellent deal for both sides.

Well the term is certainly fine. Benning clearly had to sacrifice on the AAV to get it. Canucks aren't in cap hell so this should be fine for them overall.

Considering how Benning usually does with FA, I'd call this a win for him.

Bit high, but worth it to get him on just the two years.

i think this is the ideal contract for both sides, VAN gives up money (which they have plenty of rn) and Edler gives up term, and agrees to being exposed at the expansion. this is a win/win

I think it was originally 3x5.5, so i'm happy to sacrifice the extra year for .5 in cap.
Finally something to show that Benning can sign people at their actual value.

Canucks had cap space and made it work. Good signing.

So far one of the few good signings for decent players. The Canucks don't have many cap problems for the next few years and the term is just prefect.

Played very well last season. Short enough contract with not a big overpayment. Benning did good with that one.

Well those 2 years allow him to be the ideal mentor for Hughes until he fully developps

this is a solid signing. They couldn't go longer than 2 years because of the youth on the team and the age of the player. He's a 1st pairing guy for them so 6 million AVV is fine. You have to pay good players to fill those roles.

It's better to give more AAV than more term. Kudos to Benning for not giving him the extra term

And there's a good chance he doesn't get selected by Seattle since he'll be a UFA and he wouldn't have to sign with them anyway.

It's amazing how worried so many folks are about the Seattle draft...they might lose a player, yikes.

It's more the wheeling and dealing to keep key players that more GMs were worried about. Look back at the Vegas one and the trades that went down by some of the teams.

This.

It amazes me how completely aloof some people are to the costs of not having an eye on the Expansion Draft when signing contracts in the 2 years heading up to an expansion draft.
Especially after having witnessed all the moves and picks that Vegas stole during their expansion.

If you put yourself in a situation where a potentially key young player must be left exposed due to handing out too many NMC's... its gonna cost you one way or another.

Why not be a proactive GM and look and plan ahead of time?

ORRRRR just keep being aloof and stick your head in the sand singing the soundtrack of LaLaLand and laugh at everyone talking about the Expansion Draft.

I honestly don't like this deal.

It's only 2 years, but now they have to protect a 34 YO in the Expansion draft meaning they are going to have to expose a decent prospect or decent defensemen in the draft. Whatever floats their boat I guess.

I guess thinking should be if you give a player a NMC, he should so good that he isn't going to be exposed. Then the Flyers did the promise to Hayes.

By agreeing to being exposed he won't have to be protected.

Yeah Edler agreed to be exposed in the expansion draft. It was one of the key point for the Canucks in this signing. He got a partial NTC with part of that being exposure in the expansion draft. And probably why Edler got as much as $6M.
