Any team even close to cap would have to be paid handsomely to take Shattenkirk. If you replaced Nylander with 6th round pick, it would be closer to fair.

Shattenkirk (retained)
Kreider (retained)

6th round pick

also, for arguments sake, Shattenkirk immediately becomes TOR RD2 (potentially RD1) so he doesn't have "negative" value.

just because he would become TOR best RHD does not make him a good Dman...shattenkirk has fallen off a cliff since joining the rangers in terms of play and value...hell they was talking about buying him out....

Yes. He has NEGATIVE value. Meaning, NYR will have to give up assets to get rid of him.

Shattenkirk was 7th d-man on a pretty bad NYR team....while making $6.7 million AAV. No competitive team wants that...especially a team with cap problems.

You'd have to take either Zaitsev or Marleau (with buy out) in the Leafs deal as well as retaining 1/2 on Kreider to get Nylander. Nylander only moves for a legit #1RHD or for a huge cap dump. You basically washed out the money. It'd need to save the Leafs over $5M in cap space for the deal to make sense for them.

You do realize that an NHL team just traded a 2nd and a 3rd for an older, worse and (in this case with Shattenkirk being 50% retained) more expensive Justin Braun? Shattenkirk doesn't have negative value.

Not awful at all. Why would you even ask TOR to taken on salary? Kreider/Shattenkirk make $11.3 million. TOR, and most other teams, wouldn't touch that even if you retained salary.

Asking a cap-strapped team to take on a potential buyout candidate (Shattenkirk) will cost the NYR at least one-year of Kreider.

As a 2nd pair d-man on a top playoff team, Braun makes 1/2 of Shattenkirk on one-year deal, is better than Shattenkirk, and was dealt from team that needed to resign others. Not a good comp.

Shattenkirk was often a healthy scratch on a pretty bad team....and making $6.7 mil from the press box.

Shattenkirk played in 73 games. He wasn't often scratched. Also, he costs less than Braun at 50% retained.

Braun was by far the worst Dman on SJ, of those who played regularly.

Shatty: 73 GP, 2G, 26A, -15
Braun: 78 GP, 2G, 14A, -14

Braun, at $3.8 million, played 22+ min a night in playoffs for Conf finals team that had Burns, Karlsson, Vlasic (and often against other teams top line). He must have been terrible.

Shattenkirk, at $6.65 million, is the 7th d-man on a terrible team.

So basically the same then. ok.

Idk where you get this idea that Shattenkirk is the 7th Dman on the team. The only reason he's being shopped is to make room for kids so they can continue to develop.

Disregarding players with only a handful of games, Shatty had the 2nd best Corsi and Corsi rel on the Rangers last season. Braun was 2nd worst on the Sharks in both categories.

Watching almost every Rangers game, you could tell Shatty was quite unlucky this season. He deserved more points and a better +/-. Shatty is still a more than capable defenseman. At $6.65 he's not worth it, but he'd be very much worth 50% of that.
