I don't like giving up the 2020 1st, but this is roughly what we thought the cost for Marleau would be. I wonder if this means doobie is gonna pull the trigger on something big today with all this space cleared, as the price seems to indicate that he did this quickly with something else in mind

Wooooow... Now THAT is a huge one-sided trade, ladies & gentleman! Im not gonna be surprised if Marlaeu is gonna score 20-25 goals this season. I get that Toronto need a cap space, but a 1st round pick? Really, Dubas?

Big win for Carolina, no question

Umm...GM Dumbass has traded every 1st Round pick he's owned, in 2015 he traded down in the draft, 2018 he did the same trick again by trading down in the Draft, now this year he's traded 2019 and 2020 1st Round picks for 2 years of Muzzin and to rid himself of Marleau. Wow.... I'm guessing Carolina will be buying out Marleau's contract than he'll sign in SJS for 1 million.

Draft Smaft lives again in Toronto!

And just like that all of the Leaf fans who didn't understand what a "premium asset" is suddenly came to know. The comparisons of Marleau to Detroit shedding Datsyuk's last year was completely ignoring just how screwed the Leafs were unless they moved Marleau's contract. Detroit would have been fine and missed the playoffs with or without Datsyuk's contract, so moving it to help Arizona reach the floor made sense.

I saw on Twitter yesterday they were close on a deal to re-sign Kapanen, so might just be ready to lock in some RFAs. Hard to do that without knowing what you have for space, since the league hasn't announced the cap.

It really isn't. Not ideal but the Marleau contract was bad. Considering some of the trade talk, there might be a part 2 that he NEEDED to clear space for

I was preaching those 1sts till 2022 arent needed, but i was throwing them around to bring in Top RHDs...not to dump Marleau....TML would have enough space with following :

This is why you don't give term to players 35 and older.

At what point do you accept that Kyle Dubas is not a very good GM? The Matthews deal and Nylander saga have really set the stage for RFAs to get aggressive with demands on Toronto. Then we have this cap robbery. Why even take this deal right now? Plenty of time to cultivate other offers. It's not as if Marleau is a worthless contract like Clarkson.

I think we established this about 12 months ago. Dude hasn't made a good signing since he's been here and he's lost every trade he has made. This team went from 0-100-0

Wow, this is what it cost to shred that contract? Absolutely nuts. Dubas better have a kickass plan for this offseason if he gave a first round pick

Had to happen unfortunately. Marleau will help mentor Svechnikov and all the other young canes prospects

Not sure how people are blaming Dubas for this one, everyone knew this was coming up when Lou signed the contract in the first place.

If they didn't sign Tavares and with the team progressing faster than expected resulting in larger contracts this wouldn't have been this big of an issue.

Kudos to Carolina for leveraging there position, knowing if this was the best price available it had done.
