I can't see Marner taking less than 11.5 M.. He was the team leading scorer the past 2 seasons. If Matthews and Tavares won't willing to take less $$ than why should Marner.

I could name close to 500 reasons why. But I'll keep it short.
Winger vs Center
Scorer vs playmaker
Advanced stats away from tavares are dreadful.
Best comparable is Pat Kane. His 1st contract % would have Marner at about 9.1 mil over 5. Is he better than Kane? The same Kane who had a cup before his ELC ended? Marner doesnt have a playoff series win to his name.

My ideal for him was 9.25×6

Pretty sure he would want more then that for a 6 year...more around $10M to $10.5M. 5 year maybe $9.5M and that would be a good deal for the Leafs and IMO Marner should be after a 5 year as well so he can grab one last payday when he's 27 like Panarin is doing. I have a feeling, Marner is waiting for Panarin to sign. Skinner already showed that Marner is worth a lot more then $9M AAV...Buffalo just inflated the values of Marner, Point, Aho and Panarin.

While the comparison with Kane is pretty accurate to a degree, it's hard use that contract from so long ago as a good comparison...too much has changed in a lot of aspects.

You don't think Marner is close to being as good as Matthews? Reminds me of the Kane vs. Toews discussions back in the day and clearly, Kane is the better player looking back.

Toronto screwed up the Matthews contract IMO.

Low 9s work for 5 years. I'd rather do 11 over 8 years which is also a number he is in the ballpark. But HAS to be 8 years. About 18.5% above the 5 year deals he should make. Leafs can still do itb

We used all contracts in the last 5-10 years butbit think Kane's is the highest comparable skill set Marner can use

No matthews is miles better. His 2 way game is way better and every advanced stat he destroys Marner. All done with playing beside 3rd line players in Johnsson and Kapanen while Marner plays with Tavares.

The reality is even though we might see him as 9.25 - 9.5 or whatever your opinion is, Nylander makes 7, Matthews 11.6, JT 11. He blew Nylander out of the water ever since he came to the NHL, you can’t compare them at all anymore Marner is miles better than Nylander. If i’m him why wouldn’t i be asking for at least 10.5 when he’s been better than Matthews and Tavares this past year and they make more than 11. Winger/Center doesn’t really matter he can drive a line on his own and has proved that already. Like it or not this kid is due for a big payday.

I think the Leafs overpayed on the Matthews contract. Yes, best raw goal scorer in the league, but he's the second most costly player in the NHL, and I would not argue that his level of raw talent for goal scoring equates to such a huge payment for a relatively short term, under the current salary cap.

If Marner were to sign a tit for tat 5 year deal at the same percentage of salary cap that Kane signed in 2010-11, Marner would make around $8.36M, at 10.60% of the salary cap. However, the inflation in the real cost that high scoring young players command will absolutely cause Marner to drive a higher cap hit.

To state Patrick Kane as Marner's comparable is a high complement. But Marner won't sign at a 10.6% cap hit, unfortunately, when AM34 and Skinner and Eberle and Karlsson and even Hayes get the pay they do for the amount they bring to their teams (in EK's case especially: he's injured around 50% of the time, and missed a lot of games from those injuries).

In no way is Matthews MILES better than Marner. Also Johnsson and Kapanen are not 3rd line players. Did you see who Marner played with before Tavares?

With conservative inflation of 2% that is about $9.6M in today's dollars 9 years later. Agree with everything else you're saying.

No. Matthews is a top 3-5 player in the league. Marner maybe a top 15-20?

Yes and he was a great player. But it took tavares to get him elite. There are many with/without tavares stats from last year to backup my statement. It's just facts now not opinion

Pretty self explanatory; Matthews is not a top 3 to 5 player in the league. Top 10 you can make an argument for towards the bottom of that top 10.

If you really think he's top 3 to 5, please list your top 10...I'd be interested to see how you rank the players.

Because inflation is about 2 percent per year, 6.3M dollars in today's money equates to about $7.529M. I used the compound interest formula, Amount = P (1.02^(9))

Based it off 10.6% of the cap which is $8.3M...factor in inflation which the cap increase is supposed to do to a degree.
