Islanders say no, Pulock has turned into a great 2 way #1 defenseman and he's only 24. He's worth 2 1sts and a 2nd easily. Maybe the Islanders would do Pulock, a 1st and a 2nd for Marner if they feel dobson can develop into that #1 RD in the next few years.

The thing is that the 2023 first is the hardest pick to give up in an offer sheet cause no one know where they’ll be in 4 years, so they avoid that by doing this instead of an offer sheet and they can negotiate a lower contract that would likely get matched in offer sheet rather than paying an extra mill or two to avoid matching

If Marner wouldn't sign a rumored 11 x 8 contract with his hometown team, why would he sign for less with the Islanders? I think this trade undervalues Pulock and how hard it is to develop a true #1 D in the NHL. If the leafs were set on 3 1sts and a D, they're getting Mayfield, not pulock.

You might think that it's a better option, but the Islanders most likely prefer to take the offer sheet route - it wouldn't take 13.5 mill, more like 11.5-12 . In 2023, their D core is going to be composed of Devon Toews, Ryan pulock, Bode Wilde, and Noah Dobson, could be a top 5 defense in the NHL. They're not worried about being a lottery team in 2023, especially with Trotz at the helm.

If leafs match 12 mill, that’s not smart IMO. Three players making more than 11 mill isn’t ideal.
