Matthews Trade

Created by: rednwhite
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 24, 2019
Published: Jun. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not a leafs fan and I know the Leafs don't want to ever trade Matthews but I think this team is more balanced without Matthews.

I know most Leafs fans will not like the Gardiner signing but there isn't much out there in free agency except Tyler Myers, who will likely get 7+ on a 7 year deal.

Also I didn't really pay attention to the lines. Just threw guys in where they fit.

Yeah that's not even remotely close to fair value...

I was going to throw in a high end prospect from Arizona but I am not to familiar with their prospects so I added a 2020 first which will likely be mid 1st round. Adding Ekman- Larsson makes this team better. He is probably a top 10 defenceman in the league. Matthews is a top 10 forward in the league. Value can't be that far off.

Matthews is a top 10 player in the league. arguably the second best goal scorer in the league. Not. Even. Close.

Leafs also already have two great left shot D men if you want to add a defenseman add a right shot D. And definitely not for Matthews.

I think he can be a top 5 guy in the league but he has missed time over the last few years and hasn't even been the best player on the Leafs in my opinion. Tavares and Marner are better all around players.

OEL is 27 years old. Age matters. It's not close

Since when is 27 old for a defenceman. He has 5 years in his prime before he likely starts to slow down.

i never called him old. I simply stated he is 27 years old. that's not calling him old, that's stating a fact.

As for prime ages, when when youre trading a 27 year old for a 21 year old superstar, those 6 years make a huge difference, those are prime years for Matthews and post prime for OEL (maybe tail end of prime) Prime is typically 22 - 27 ish for most players,, and then players typically start declining a little, but not too noticeably, and then past 30 the decline is more significant, with most falling of a cliff by 34. There is tons of data out there to back that up , feel free to spend 5 minutes googling it.

Even if OEL and Matthews were of similar calibre, it's a stupid trade given the ages. It's an even more ridiculous trade when you add on to the fact that OEL and Matthews are not even close to being in the same tier.

Never said he wasn't a great goal scorer, scoring goals is only part of the game...

the most important part and the hardest thing to do.
