The Devils would be scary good if they could add Marner. I wonder if a deal similar to Matthews would scare off the Leafs. 11.6 x 5 would bring Marner to UFA at the same time as Matthews which would be a situation the Leafs would like to avoid if possible. Devils could go another route and offer something crazy like 15 x 3. The Leafs couldn't fit that cap hit, while I think the devils could make it work for the next 3 years before Hughes needs a new deal. Marner would still be a RFA I think and the Devils would still have his rights and look to lock him up long term then or move him if he under performs.
In theory that all works but then we lose 4 firsts and you wind up not locking up marner long term.
I think the max an offer will come in at is just below the 4 (1st's) which I assume leafs match. It's unfortunate for Marner cause as "greedy" as everyone claims he is, he's right. He's as important to that team as anyone and if he wants closer to matthews money theres a team willing to pay him closer to matthews money, but the system restricts them from doing it. His issue is he performed too well and therefore maxed out his rfa contract at 10.5 unless someone decides they draft terribly anyway lol
In a league where there are tons of bad contracts marner at 11 or even 11.5 is not that bad. you have a 94 point player locked up till 30 at 11.5...what do you think the cap will be in 2027? lets not forget marner at 28 will likely be playing much better than tavares at 34. tavares got paid, matthews got paid, marner should get paid. the issue is he cant in toronto and rfa makes it so he cant elsewhere either. People saying he doesn't deserve mcdavid money are ignorant, deals are about timing, mcdavid took a discount to begin with, but he also signed before the cap rose. Hall won mvp at 6 million, literally speaking that means everyone else in the league should have been paid under and relative to that figure...that's just not how it works. Crosby I don't even think is paid in the top 10, does that mean jeff skinner shouldn't take what buffalo will pay him?
The conversation should be a team is willing to pay you this mitch. take it, or sign at this # to stay with your friends. Instead the O/S's heavily lopsided compensation creates this saga
