Flames Trade

Description
Earlier I did a CGY - TOR trade from the Flames perspective and had some complaints about the leafs cap space so I decided to do one from the leafs perspective as well. Its close the the cap but stays under and still accounts for Hyman's injury.

As stated in my previous post I also don't have an issue with Hamonic being the D piece moved to the Leafs instead of Brodie, although I do think Brodie will be a better fit for that top line then either of Hamonic or Miler. I would also prefer to keep Hammer on the Flames as he meshed really well with Hanifin last year.

===========================================
Trade thought:
- i personally think Brown can fetch a 3rd or a 4th + Benning, but the later didn't fit my budget.
- A 3rd for Zaitsev might be a bit much in which case you are probably looking at a 4th instead.
- The Miller trade seems to be pretty standardized around this package at the moment so I felt it was pretty fair, considering Vegas' current cap issues as well. If the 3rd can't be fetched for Zaitsev then the 3rd for brown will be used in this trade instead.

The trade isn’t horrible value wide but the leafs do not want or need Brodie. He is certainly not a better fit. Hamonic would be a perfect fit but I think the flames will re sign him.

Hard pass on the Kadri trade

People need to realize that the Leafs are in a cap crunch, and the solution is apparently to trade a cap efficient player (ie he is about a 6-7 million dollar player making 3.4). It makes no sense.

Kadri is worth about 5-6M not 6-7. Hes not quite as good as Tomas Hertl or W. Karlsson but not far off Karlsson's about to get a 5.9M x 8yr contract. As for the cap crunch vs cap efficient players Kadri is significantly over paid for a 3C role. If he stays in the 3C position he will put up very similar numbers to last year (see Lars Eller's contract for a comparable 3C stats excluding PP). If the Leafs wanted to be cost efficient with a trade they woul get rid of either Matthews or Tavaras and re-promote Kadri but that's not going to happen.

Kadri is a high end defensive center who can put up 32 goals (has done it twice), signed through his prime. Compare him to a guy like Ryan Johansen who is getting 8 million. Compare him to Hayes who just got 7 million.

Kadri has been as good or better than Karlsson at an equivalent age except for karlssons year last year which looks like it may be a blip.

It's also worth it to overpay your 3 c over wingers as if there is an injury he becomes your 1 or 2 c which is important.

Always build from the centre out

Saying he's a high end defensive center is a bit of an overstatement. I'm not saying he isn't a defensive center, but hes not high end. Kadri had been considered for the Selke trophy twice in his career; in 16-17 when he got 19 votes and 12-13 when he got 3. Hell even Monahan got 19 votes in 14-15 and we don't consider him much of a defensive center at all.

As for a 3c stepping in due to injury I 100% agree and the leafs have Kadri and Nylander for that. IMHO Nylander should be traded first but Dubas isn't going to do that, and there is a lot of spite between Kadri and fans due to his suspensions so moving him for that makes sense as well.

If you think Kadri is worth 6-7M because of his defensive performance what is Couturier worth, who is a legitimate high end defensive center?

Couturier on the open market now would get 9 I would imagine. He's better than Duchene and that is what they're saying he'd get.

Kadri was the Leafs shutdown center two years in a row until Tavares came in and they stopped using a shutdown center.

He did a good job of it.

High end may have been a bit of an exaggeration but I'd happily put him out against any line.

The going rate for a top 6 center is 6 mil plus. Look what Brock Nelson and hayes just got.

Kadri is incredible for the Leafs for the safety valve he provides by being an incredible 3rd line center, and being available to be an above average second line center or acceptable first line center if injuries were to occur. And he does it at a very reasonable cost for a center.

In the last 3 years Kadri is 19th in goals by a C (http://hkref.com/tiny/ijF9z) with 80. That's ahead of guys like O'Reilly, Giroux, Duchene, Eichel, etc

He's also tied for 39th at 160 with RNH. http://hkref.com/tiny/gryyM

That means he'd be the best goal scoring c on 13/31 teams and a second line C by pts

Now you could say that's because he's been healthy and you'd be right to a degree, but he still has produced well per game:

He's tied for 26th with Couturier and Zibenajad for goals per game at 0.34 (http://hkref.com/tiny/KGP3M) and he's tied for 52nd with Keller, Skinner, and Stastny and 0.68. Also note Skinner is in this list with other pure wingers so he's actually high on a pure center list.

He's a top 40 centre paid under 5 million through his prime.
