Steal by Chicago. Carolina is probably gonna make a run at Bob + Panarin.

Weird that Chicago keeps taking in a lot of cap when big pieces of their young core want paydays in a year.

CHI get a regular D and a decent prospect in Saarela. CAR gets two FAs, add depth on D but hope for them that they don't plan to have Forsberg as backup...

Big win for CHI. Trading away two guys that basically said they weren't going to sign in CHI for a solid D. They have to move a dman or two... it'll be interesting to see the next move

De-Haan has been very good in Carolina. Confused why they did this.

De Haan was a substantial piece to their success this past year, it really makes you think what they have planned. Just on the surface, it most likely means that Bean or Fleury is going to be a regular next year and Faulk may be staying. Carolina must've had a good meeting with some big FAs during the talking period to make a move like this.

I do like this deal for Chicago though. They improve their defence and they had the cap space.

Win for Carolina because they unload cap to try and get a big free agent smarter long term if it works out but Chicago wins short term

What is CHI planning? Keith, Gustafsson, Matta, and now DeHaan all at LD? not counting Koekkoek, Beaudin, Dahlstrom, Krys all young LD...

Gustafsson on the move?

It really depends what Aho wants. If he's reasonable then they may have been able to sign one of those guys anyway, but if Aho asks for like 11M per year or whatever then maybe moving De-Haan was a move they needed. It's a risk, though, because lots of teams will be going after Bob and Bread. They probably could have gotten a better return.

Only if they get good value. IMO he's pretty underrated. People talk about him like he's a 4/5 guy (or at least i think that's what most people think he is) and he's a 60 point d-man. Yes, it was just one good year, but 60 points as a d-man? That's pretty good.

Chicago now have 5 overpaid defenders. Why not make it 6!

They have 5 not 6. They need another one to make it 6.

You mean Keith, Seabrook, Murphy, De-Haan, and Maatta?

Seabrook is definitely overpaid, yes.
Keith i think is maybe a little underrated right now. He's still a very good defenseman. As of right now, it's not a horrible contract. The extra 4 years isn't great though.
Murphy isn't making a ton. Maybe a little overpaid but you could argue either way.
De-Haan i'm not so sure is overpaid compared to the average NHLer. He had a very good year in Carolina and isn't making a crazy amount.
Maatta is a little overpaid IMO. Not too much but maybe should be making more like 2.75-3M.

You could argue Keith is being paid what he deserves right now, but you are correct with the term, that is what makes it a bad contract.
You said every defensemen is overpaid so why even make the comment? Just say you agree

I didn't say every one is overpaid. Look what i said about De-Haan, Keith, and Seabrook. Keith isn't overpaid NOW. Just too long a contract.

So they sign him as a UFA for four years and trade him after one? That can't happen very often.

Wow, CHI def won this one. When I saw DeHaan to CHI I automatically assumed Saad is part of the deal.
I think Gus is gone now, he can bring really nice return, possible top 6 LW or RW.
CAR if I were to guess is after Bob. Panarin is not coming to CAR or FL, maybe if no one else offer him anything decent, but thats hard to believe.

Gustafsson is probably the league's best value D heading into next season as a cap hit of only $1.2M. They're still in need of a much better defensive bottom six forward group. They were about the worst on the league last season.
