Don't the picks have to be your own, and from the next four years, and they already traded 2020 to CAR

Marner will sign, possibly after July 1st, and then everyone can stop panicking.

I think Tampa would just match that $10m offer sheet for point. They have some cap space now and could make it work.

A couple issues. FIrst, I think the Leafs would take offer sheet and run. Between the Devils luck and how bad they still are, those picks could be gold. Second, I am not sure if they have changed the rule, but the Leafs do not own their 1st round pick in 2020, so could they use NJD's 1st to substitute? Not sure. Third, as I mentioned in my very very recent AGM, why not just trade Marner straight up for Point. As far as a hockey deal is concerned, I think that's a pretty decent trades for both teams. Finally, I think Tampa would match any offer sheet, even if it means having to do more to fix their cap situation after that steal of a JT Miller deal.

"Not necessarily point" - My bio

And I am not panicking, I am not even a leaf fan. I am just intriguing on how Marner is dealing with the whole situation

It does have to be your own picks, so unless they get their 1st back from Carolina, they can't do anything involving a 1st.

All the big RFAs are pretty much doing the same thing but Marner is talked about more because it is Toronto. There are so many good young RFAs but Marner is the most talked about for a trade or offer sheet. He will eventually sign, but his agent is doing what agents do.

Why not have the devils picks plus a top 20 player in the league instead of 8 first round picks?

What about a guy like Tkachuk in Calgary.

Also, do you know how long a team has to match an offer sheet once its sign?

"Interesting to note, while the 4 first round picks have to be the clubs own draft picks, they can be from a 5 year window. So, a team without a 2020 first round pick can still put in an offer sheet." - Dregger

I am not saying the Leafs wouldn't make moves with some of those 1st rounders, probably their own, and keep as many of NJD's as possible, but they could surely spread the wealth a little bit, and I am still convinced Tampa matches absolutely anything thrown at Point.

I like Tkachuck, I just think there are some issues there with him being an RFA and all these young RFA getting, or expecting so much, plus Marner is a far better player, even though I think the Leafs would benefit from a more in-your-face rough and tumble sort of game Tkachuck brings to the table. And term can be decided on a per offer sheet basis, but I'd imagine that any team wanting to do this would do a max term since pulling an offer sheet move is such a bold move in this league anyway, right?

So Darren Dreger via Twitter just cleared that up, that it could be the Leafs 2021 1st in play as part of their own offer sheet, instead of the 2020, which they do not have.

I stand corrected. From the FAQ on this site:

"The draft picks must available in the nearest entry draft, unless the compensation requires two or more draft picks in the same round: an extra year can be used to for compensation for these picks (if two 1st round picks are required, the club must have two 1st round picks available in the next three drafts)"

I meant a player like Tkachuk. As in you let Marner go for 4 first rounders and you sign a player who falls in the tier below (e.g. 2 firsts, a second and third)

And yes, offer sheets are a bold move, but we're in uncharted waters. This situation has never happened before. All the experts are horny for something to happen

I would only consider Tkachuk as a solid replacement IF the Leafs could acquire him and he would be willing to sign a max term deal with the Leafs at no more than $8 million AAV.

But the 1st rounder is conditional. It could be a 2020 or a 2021. I know the Leafs will give them the 2020 pick in the end because it won't be in the top 10. But until next year is over and it definitely is the 2020 pick I don't think they can trade the 2021 pick

I believe the condition was lottery protected, so if the Leafs don't make the playoffs, they keep, or can choose to keep, their 2020 pick and give up their 2021. And I think they could still offersheet using their 2021, only that they would have waive the condition on the 2020, which I am sure the Canes would have no issue with.

I don’t understand why Marner doesn’t just say fine, gimme 8.75 mill for 2 years. With a 8 mill signing bonus each year.

I don't think Toronto wants to do that... you'll end up paying him 13M+ instead of 11ish now done the road with other rookies coming off entry-level contracts

I agree, but they created this situation. The leafs should’ve re-upped as soon as they could. Other then Matthews wanting to wait, I think the wingers would have signed up early.

I was mad when the Oilers re-upped McDavid before locking down Draisaitl. That looks brilliant compared to Toronto spreading all these guys out over 3 years, and signing Tavares in the middle while knowing the cap was going up.

The Tavares signing makes sense to me if you're trading one of Marner, Matthew or Nylander for assets to fill holes.

It's really ambitious of Dubas to want to keep all 3 of them and still be a well-rounded team, and not just an offensive juggernaut.

One could never fault them for getting Tavares. Was a lot of bad timing with contracts, the cap, and a management change for sure.

They’re gonna have to give to get, and they definitely gotta get some defence.
