Minor Moves Cap Grooves

Created by: Zubrowka
Team: 2019-20 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 25, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Melnyk will gladly exchange a CLB 3rd for a MTL 7th for a real net savings of $2.95mil. Schlemko will assist the Sens' tanking efforts with his 'veteran presence.' Comcast will gladly pay the bill to reduce the Flyers' real cap hit plus add some draft capital for the trade deadline.

LA could use a young, cheap LD on the 3rd pair. Hagg is a change of scenery candidate with plus skating and physicality. He might find his game, or he might just assist with LA tanking late in the season. Either way, it's a good low risk fit.

Goaltending, aside from Bobrovsky, looks like a buyer's market. Assuming he's this affordable, Varlamov looks like a solid candidate to form a tandem with Hart.

Pebbles is unlikely to be re-signed by Vegas, given that they are well over the cap. Reuniting with Philly in his customary role on a 2 year deal seems reasonable and helps the PK. He's older now, but the price is right. That 4th line has shutdown written all over it.

You have the effect backwards. MacArthur is LTIR money; it doesn't hit the cap. Schlemko is healthy, so he hits the cap. This gets Ottawa $2.1 closer to the floor, while saving $2.95mil in real money.

Edit: Let me break it down this way so it is super clear:

Schlemko
Cap hit - $2.1
Salary/Bonus Total - $1.8

MacArthur
Cap hit - $0 (LTIR)
Salary/Bonus Total - $4.75

TY for the comment prompting me to lay it out better.

The problem is that LITR doesn't remove the players cap hit from the teams cap total - it expands it by a certain amount (which depends on when and how it's done). It can be a real negative for trying to accumulate cap space and bonus payments.

Thanks, I understand the LTIR mechanic is more complicated. I was purposefully keeping the explanation as simple as possible to get at the reasons for the deal; why it makes sense for both teams.

MacArthur's salary is higher than his AAV, whereas Schlemko's is lower than his AAV. Melnyk is notoriously cheap. He gets to the cap floor more efficiently, with less real money spent by making the deal, period.
CaptJosef liked this.

That would be choosing to turn down $400k of real money. Can't see Melnyk doing that.
