So many players in FA would be available as an upgrade for similar $. Bit of an overpayment.

Especially since it is a one-way and he is the worst of our 8 defensemen or so

Not a huge overpayment, but an overpayment all the same - 900K-1 million should be the max that Reilly pulls in. He has great speed and offensive instincts, but is very mistake-prone in his own end. Habs have terrific RD depth but LD is a hole so this is a result of that I suppose. I think Jordie Benn, while himself imperfect, at 2 X 2.5 would have been a wiser use of money for a 3rd pair LD but what can you do. In the most charitable scenario, perhaps MB realized that Jake Gardiner would be far too expensive as a UFA and had to go this route.

If Reilly can find consistency, he can be a good number 5 Dman in today's game and has shown few-games stretches of #4 quality last year. Overall, it is slightly overpaid but the cap space will not be used until Gallagher and Danault get their new deals in 2 years. And if all goes south, the contract can be burried and only costs a 400k cap hit (Money being a non-issue for the Habs).

With the weak UFA class on defense this year, I don't think an upgrade could've been found at a reasonable price for the left side of the defense core.

Bergevin hinted that Benn wanted way more than market value.

If Reilly doesn't do the job, he can be buried, so no biggie honestly.

Fair deal. Honestly more than I was expecting, but it’s a good deal for the habs.

Gardiner is too expensive. Lack of alternative.

Bergevin just saw Avs get Connauton and CHI get De Haan .... WHY CAN'T WE GET A LD?!?!?

This soooo depressing...

I had him going for closer to $1M and as someone who, at best, is a mediocre 3rd pairing guy this is a moderate overpayment.

With the decreased (rel to expectations) cap, there would have been decent players available who can be 6th/7th D-men for much closer to NHL minimum. Just cause you have the cap space doesn’t mean you have to senselessly use it.

Unfortunately only $1.05M can be buried, leaving a $450,000 cap hit even if he’s riding the buses to/from Laval.

They don't have anyone big to sign, so it's good.

Leafs have 3 defensemen currently signed that are better than Reilly
