This is a really fair trade. Canes get an upgrade at center to plug in either on second or third line, and Vegas sheds cap, and potentially gets younger. Can't see anything going wrong here.

are you high? Vegas got took here.

Maybe the prospect turns into something, but the odds are he doesn't. They also got a late round pick that means little. They gave up a good player. I know they are up against the cap, but the truth is I think they could have got a better return here.

You have to remember that Haula is coming off a serious injury. Nevertheless, this trade has nothing but upside for Carolina. Did Waddell suddenly develop wings or something?

I realize he tore up his R knee, but all reports were he was ready to play again if they had advanced in the playoffs. While I don't expect him to be 100% in the first year, even an 80% has more value than this.

I can't see how CAR can lose on this. They gave up another forward that at best is a call up/fill in and the 5th is basically a dart to throw at that board from 100ft. This kid has speed to burn and should mesh well with Aho and Teravainen. If that line clicks look out. This was definitely not the player I saw VGK shedding due to his relatively low cap hit but it seems like a gift to CAR at this point.

You think on a power play? Haula is going to play in the middle.

They all have multiple listings for positions on their pages so that would be in the coaches hands. I would not dismiss the idea until I saw them on the ice together.

So that means Necas either play wing or stay in the ahl for one more season.

This trade is good for both sides. The only looser is Necas. I was expecting that he will take the 3C spot. So this means that he will play on the RW or stay in Charlotte (please no!).

Good trade on both sides. Did CAR get the best player. Yes. Was Vegas up against the cap ceiling...YOU KNOW IT, and they still are. It could have been worse. Vegas might have needed to add. Which if this is the best offer they got...most teams were probably asking Vegas to add prospects/picks just to take him on.

Vegas had no choice, they have to move out cap. I think they probably got more than they should have in Roy but in the end it helps both teams.

Poor Vegas has to shed all their depth just for Mark Stone

I wouldn't say all their depth. Probably 1 more guy needs to go and that is it, depending on what they give Gusev.

Considering 3rd line centers usually go for 1x 2nd round pick as rentals and more as signed players (Eller, Coyle, in a way Stepan and Shaw), I have to say the Canes win that trade.

Haula scored 29G in '17-18. If he scores even 20G next season for only $2.75M he'd be one of the best values in the entire league. CAR wins this trade by a mile and then some. This is exactly what happens when teams like VGK are in a cap crunch. Other teams swoop in and exploit them.

They can only lose if Haula gets hurt again and/or can't return to, or even close to, his old form. But, even if that happens, CAR has ample cap space and therefore, minimal risk. This trade is a huge win for CAR. Also, you're correct that Haula will also have the opportunity to move up in the lineup. He'd have most certainly been relegated to a bottom six role/ second PP unit on VGK. He will have every opportunity to play w/ some of CAR's best young offensive talents. Since VGK added Stasny and Paccioretty, he'd no longer have had that opportunity for VGK.

Mark Stone is an elite 2-way player. He's set for a career season w/ VGK. IMO he's about as valuable as Bergeron in all around skill. Locking him up long term was a monster W for VGK.

Waddell was out of the NHL for years. Thinking he was reading the experts on CapFriendly for the past half decade and is now a competent NHL GM.

Cap space is a wonderful thing. When you got it you can "steal" players. When you don't you lose them for peanuts. Haula could play top 6 role and 1st PP in CAR. He could score 25+ goals next season and be the steal of the 2019 summer.

I'm a Leaf fan, so tell me this concept of "cap space". Since the cap was installed, every Leaf GM has never understood the value of cap space.

Vegas blows it again losing probably every trade they made not counting all the draft day ones from expansion... It bothers me they couldn't even secure a 5th round pick or a clean pick for a guy who basically had 30 goals his last full year... Guys who don't even play for teams that will be UFA get a 5th rounder or better just for talking rights... I gave edge to CArolina who I think will be another competitive team though East has Rangers/Devils who will make it harder for them to get in playoffs etc...
