Chaos is a Ladder A Melnyk Style Rebuild

Created by: Zubrowka
Team: 2019-20 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 26, 2019
Published: Jun. 27, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
True Melnyk Style Rebuild Objectives:

* Keep the team as close to the cap floor as possible ($60.2 million), because Melnyk is cheap AF.

* Acquire draft picks wherever possible. Draft hope springs eternal.

* Add some young talent, but don't actually make the team good. This is a rebuild.

* Ensure a very good lottery chance at the top pick for the next 2 drafts, by sucking hard and often.

* Avoid losing players for nothing. Trade pending free agents now or prepare for doing it at the deadline.

* No UFA signings to fill holes. Promote the kids or take on cap dumps from other teams.

Trades
1.
OTT
  1. Schlemko, David
  2. 2020 7th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Schlemko's salary is just 1.8m. He gets Ottawa to the cap floor more cheaply by $300k of pure profit and can serve as a veteran 7th D man. No prospects are rushed or put into a bench warmer role.
MacArthur's salary is higher than the AAV by $100k. It's a useless $4.75 million salary off the books.
PHI
  1. MacArthur, Clarke
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Philly is essentially taking on $2.95 million additional salary to shed (after LTIR) $2.1 million of cap, which is $1.4 mil better than burying Schlemko in the AHL and replacing him with a league minimum contract) and gaining some draft capital in the pick swap.
2.
OTT
  1. Wennberg, Alexander
  2. 2020 1st round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Albatross contract cap dump
CBJ
  1. Tierney, Chris ($1,468,750 retained)
  2. 2020 6th round pick (SJS)
  3. 2020 6th round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Decent depth player pending RFA.
3.
OTT
  1. Turris, Kyle
  2. 2020 1st round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Gain valuable draft capital and keep the net salary exchange roughly equal for this year by offloading the useless Gaborik contract. Turris will be a bad contract going forward, but the team will not be fighting the cap ceiling any time soon.
NSH
  1. Gáborík, Marián
  2. Pageau, Jean-Gabriel ($1,550,000 retained)
  3. 2020 7th round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Acquire a useful depth forward on short term and dump potential albatross contract in Turris for more cap room to add Duchene and any other UFA target. Gaborik can be on LTIR for cap relief, but this is a real financial and draft capital hit for dumping Turris.
4.
OTT
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
Additional Details:
Get me out of Toronto.
TOR
  1. Ceci, Cody [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Get me out of Ottawa.

It's actually an advantage for Ottawa to keep both Gaborik and MacArthur. Both are on IR which means insurance covers a majority (80%) of their contracts. Ridding themselves of both players would actually cost the team more money because they would have to reach the floor without both MacArthur and Gaborik's cap hits.

& pls.. no Zaitsev.

Good point. Wasn't considering insurance impact at all.

Do we know where the 80% thing is originally cited. It's 80% as far as I'm aware but I don't know where the number comes from exactly.
