is 600k really the difference between a good contract and a bad contract?

Yeah, Marner would not accept 6.4 million, but now that TOR have 6.9 of cap space to offer him, smooth sailing from here... wink

A lot of people were claiming his cap-hit would be 4 million on a 1-2 year contract and close to 5 million for anything longer.

I was annoyed with Dubas after the Matthews signing ... but these deals (Johnsson + Kapanen) are a good recovery.

He should also get some credit for re-signing so many guys with cap-hits under 800K:

$775,000 - Moore
$775,000 - Petan
$750,000 - Rosen
$750,000 - Sparks
$700,000 - Borgman
$700,000 - Hutchinson
$675,000 - Gauthier
$675,000 - Holl
$675,000 - Kaskisuo

I feel like he's improving ... maybe he started tuning out Paul Dreger?

I think you forgot to put Horton on LTIR .... wink

So that $6,900,000 is more like $12,240,000 in cap space .

And replacing Brown with ... Petan / Bracco / Mikheyev / Marchment / Engvall / Korshkov ... will push it up to $13,500,000 ish.

Which will likely make the team better in itself ... while also netting an asset in return.

When it is 18% of the contract yes it is. 600k on top of a 10m contract is nothing, 600k on a 3.4m contract means much more.

I’m not sure why people are so upset by the Matthews contract. Do you remember how he started the season before his injury? I would have liked to see more term on that contract but it was pretty much a blank cheque for Matthews. When it comes to a franchise C who is one of the best goal scorers in the league you make him happy and you keep him here for his whole career.

Yeah I agree ... but my thought process before the signing was that Matthews cap-hit would be equal to Tavares (possibly less).

To me it felt like he disrespected Tavares' a bit ... the dude was "the biggest UFA signing in decades" and there was a bidding war for his services.

Why you gotta one up your boy like that Matthews?

I had Matthews between 10.5-11m before the 18/19 season. After what he brought last year and what he showed he can do(with rookie linemates). I was like “well back up the Brinks truck”. The only way dubas could have failed that negotiation is by not having it signed by July 1st. Offersheets don’t happen, but if mathews made it to rfa he would have received multiple sheets. His price would have been something the leafs could not afford. We have him for 5 years if he proves that he can be healthy and make it look like nhl 19 on rookie mode then break the bank again and make his second contract the 8 year retirement plan.

Matthews = Without a doubt the greatest Mexican hockey player of all time ... and not just because I can't name number 2.

Too a much lesser extent yes. Leafs saved about 2-3m in cap space signing Moore, Borgman, sparks, Hutchinson, Rosen and petan to one way deals.

The difference between 600k and 130k is what it is but if you do 5 times you have enough to add a player to your roster.

"That guy" spews nonsense for reactions ...
"That guy" just puked on my girlfriends leg ...

"That guy" is naked for some reason ...

As we all did.....Eichel comparison.

So my beef with it is term...could live with 8 x 11,634, which would be exactly what he should earn ( if we transfer McDavids contract being signed in Jan 2019 would be 13,7M worth with inflation ). "Helping" TML with shorter term is bollocks for me, he just wants out asap for 19M per Season....and thats my resentment against him from fan base point of view.

wow, excellent. The only problem you need like 3 good D to even be competitive, so at least $6-8 mil need to be spend there.

I still just don't see this team as being very competitive in the playoffs. They still lack so much on the backend. They're obviously one of the elite offensive teams in the league, but you can't outscore your way to the Cup. Every single year we learn how difficult and different the playoffs are from the regular season.

Tampa has had the same problems. You're not gonna win playoff games 6-5. And this Leafs team, as presently constructed, will not win deep into the playoffs. They'll never win the big 1-0 game or 2-1 in 2OT game. They're too soft, undisciplined, and I know I'll get heat for saying this: poorly coached by Mike Babcock.
