Description
Article on The Athletic today suggests that the relationships between Kessel and many in the Pens organization is beyond repair. Since he has been rumored to have Arizona on his list because of Tocc, Arizona could offer him this package. I know it does not seem like "fair value", but Rob Rossi, the author of the article and Penguins beat writer wrote that the Penguins "will not 'win' any trade involving Kessel based on the position he has put them in". In return the Pens get a serviceable second pairing defenseman on a team friendly contract, and a promising young winger who simply needs a change of scenery.

Unfortunately, I think that the Coyotes wouldn't offer this trade even though they should. Chayka has reiterated over and over again his desire to keep the "core" of the team together, which probably includes Fischer and most definitely includes Demers, who has been OEL's partner on the first pair for the past 2 seasons. Either way, if this trade could be pulled off, Arizona would most certainly benefit and the Penguins can end the saga without significantly decreasing their team's competitiveness and shedding cap in the process.

I like it. However, make the 2020 2nd round pick conditional to become a 1st if ARI gets into the second round of the playoffs. PIT could throw in a 3rd round pick.

Pretty sure the Coyotes would do that

No they don’t. So we’re trading an 80 point winger for a 20 point winger? Demers is on a decline. He’d be a bottom pair D for us. Pens can do a lot better. The Zucker/Rask for Johnson/Kessel was a better return and even that wasn’t that great.

Obviously the Minny trade is a better return. But he declined it. And there have been no indications to suggest that he would reconsider that decision. This (or something similar) might be the best that they can do.

it's possible. after all GM;s make mistakes. but this is nowhere close to fair value. Pitt should have Dvorak+Fischer coming back for a guy of kessels calibre. that's fair value. but GMJR has made many mistakes recently so I could see him selling low on Kessel.

I know its not fair value, I said so in the description. But the Kessel is in the driver's seat in this situation, not Rutherford. He gets to choose if/where he goes. If Rutherford can't find a deal that both satisfies Kessel and is also fair value, he has to decide whether or not his 80 points is worth keeping around for all of the dysfunction he causes with the coaching staff.
