Even with the Cole injury to start the year, the Avs have way too many LHD looking to break into the nhl lineup. I think MacDonald is a better player than Toninato but I don't see why the Avs would do this based on the positions

I'd say they are preparing a Cole or Zadorov trade. MacDonald will probably start in the AHL and I guess they want some insurance in case Byram will need some time to adjust. So either Girard/Zadorov/Byram with a Cole trade or Girard/Byram/anyone of Barberio, Connauton and Graves when Zadorov is traded and Cole still injured

Barberio won't be back. I seriously wonder if Sakic isn't trying to create serious competition so whoever ends up in the nhl roster come October will have earned it.

Barberio is already under contract for 19-20. And I guess so but even if Byram plays in the WHL we have 7 LHD capable of playing in the NHL - thats a waste if we keep a bunch of them in the AHL
