I've been mulling something with a 4 or 5 year contract with the cap hit of $10,366M. With that, Marner, Matthews and Tavares would be $33M combined on the dot.

Why is Marner worth over $10M? To be honest I don;t think he is worth the $9.5M i think he is goign to get.

Aho on an offersheet only got $8.4M, Point and Rantenen are both going to be in that range and have more goals and PPG than Marner, Point is a Center. No reason why Marner is not in the $8.4M range other than TO Media hype

In my opinion Aho got lowballed big time with that offer. I was surprised to see him go with that money.

Still think Marner's first comparison is going to be Matthews.

Matthews is not his comparison. NHL pays premium for goal scorers and Centers. Marner is neither. Aho is at market value. Point is expected to be at that same amount.

Is Marner the best winger in the NHL? if not why should they pay him like he is

Marner should be paid less than Tavares and Matthews and more than Nylander. His range 7 to 9 million per year. His stats are inflated based on where and who he plays with. Assists increase by 21 with Tavares but goals are consistent. If he gets between 8 and 9 million he will make more than any bruin player. Its crazy.

4yrs 9.16M

Mitch gets walked directly into UFA status without buying a year, and the Leafs get a reasonable AAV.
5 year term means 34, 29 and 16 all expire at the same time which is a nightmare waiting to happen.

I can't see them finding a number that works for both on a 6 year or longer term.
I'd rather do 3 than 4, because at least he's still a RFA at the end of the deal and we can't lose him for nothing...but I think it'll be 4 x 9.0-9.5M

RFA's become UFA's after 4 years so a 3 year deal would keep him an RFA but 4 years would walk him into being a unrestricted free agent which is never done because it's not smart asset management. My personal thoughts are the Marner should be signed for 9.5m for 6 years max. Anything over is an overpayment. Leafs were rumoured to have offered Marner 10m for 8 years and he declined so 2 years less for half a million less seems like a compromise for both sides.

I figure this is the best place to put this question, at least to start with. When Leaf fans are trying to argue that Marner should get less because he played with Tavares, why are no Leafs fans taking into account that Matthews also benefitted for JT being on the Leafs, even if it was less directly? While I don't have the exact numbers of what line and which d pairing was matched against which opposing forward line (if anyone has an accurate non-pay wall site for that please let me know), based on what I saw when I did watch the Leafs (they are the local broadcast in my area so I saw a decent amount) it seemed like the opposing team was matching against the JT line mainly, and Matthews was getting the secondary assignments from the opposition.
This isn't an argument saying Marner should get Matthews money, but can the whole 'well Marner played with a good C' thing be mitigated, at least partially, by the argument that Matthews was playing behind a good C?

3 year deal = 7.77 million AAV

My preference beyond that is is 8 years, 9.5 million AAV

In January of this year I made an ACGM in which I gave Marner a 2 year 8 million per contract and...got laughed at...
Fast forward to present day and now an AAV under 8 million seems fair... Go figure.
