Why did Florida just not buy out Reimer? Am I missing something or did they really just want a 6th rd pick?

There MUST be 50% salary retention on Darling's contract....

and Flo will buyout the rest of it.

Or else this deal doesn't make any sense, Darling have a higher cap hit and can't catch a beach ball for the last 2 years.

Signing bonus on Reimer's contract. Panthers did not want to pay it and so took the longer contract with no SB's to buy out instead. Overall less money going to CAR, less money all at once going to FLA and a pick.

Do the Canes forget they have a big name player to sign named Aho>? Why have they added 10 million in dead cap space with the 2 ex-Leafs when that 10 million needs to go to A-hole.

I'm sorry but I still dont get it. Darling's buyout doesn't come cheap. FLO are saving around 2. 8 millions this year, and they don't have a backup goalie anymore... Even with a rookie goalie at 750k for replacement, Florida only shred 2 millions on the capfor this year and 0.3 next year.

I guess Florida REALLY needed the cap space to sign Panarin! Carolina won that one easy.

The buyout makes it interesting. Darling was making a little more than Reimer, but now Florida gets cap space AND a pick but they lose Reimer. Carolina takes cap, gives up a pick, and gets a better goalie IMO. Interesting trade.

Edit: Lol Carolina also gets cap space. My mistake.

Florida loses for the only reason that their goalie situation is absolutely terrible and this would not help it in any way.

Not cap space, real money. This was a money deal through and through.
Florida will likely run

Bob
Montembeault <--- played a bunch last year and played relatively well

Car likely runs

Mrazek (?)
Nedovik (sic)

and buys out Reimer

Darling buyout is still as expensive than Reimer's left salary (6.8mils ). That's not it. Also I beleive Reimer will not be bought out.

I mean, all of the insiders are saying that it was a money thing and even if CAR don't buyout Reimer they will be paying less overall (assuming the kept Darling) for a player then paying a buyout for someone who wont play for them.
Basically they get a player for salary they were not going to play.
FLA does the trade as they get out of Reimer's bonus and having to buy out Reimer (with that bonus).

If a contract is bought out, then any team holding salary retention on a deal also buys out their share of a contract.

In this case, I don’t believe there is any salary retention. FLA takes on an extra bit of cap hit, for what reason I really don’t know. I reckon Darling’s contract will get bought out - but why they weren’t able to extract more from Carolina is truly perplexing.

Carolina saves a small amount and hopefully, I imagine, they get a goalie who can at least give them NHL minutes (as opposed to Darling).

the only reason I can think of doing this is cap structure.

The Darling buyout is only a 2.3 max cap hit. the Reimer buy out is a 3.2 million cap hit. So if you are looking at long term cap compliance you might not be able to fit into year 2 this way.
The money is almost even, it's about 400k difference to FL.

First I look at Reimer going to Carolina and I'm like ok this was Florida's cap dump to sign Bobrovsky, then I look at the other side of the deal... I just don't get it.

edit: Now after reading a few good comments I get it.

Florida saves $675K in actual money from the buyout difference and gets more costs certainty in the cap hit post buyout. This is because of Reimer's signing bonus. The deal was strictly money and cap certainty.

Lunatics rule n nothing changed in Florida. Wonder how Quenneville feels? at least they have a 6th round pick to show for the buyout cost!
