As much as I would like Matheson in Detroit I doubt Florida will trade him and if they do it will be for more than Bernier who is a 30yr old back up goalie. Toronto is not giving up a 2nd pick for Bowey. No one is going to give 6th or 7th rd pick for Ericsson he will be a Red Wing till the end of the season when he retires. I think that is too much for Gardiner I go up to $5.25M but that's about it. Smith is 37 so any contract he signs is a 35+ contract. That means Detroit is on the hook for the full cap hit no matter what. If he goes on to LITR or if he gets buried Detroit still has his full cap to deal with. Plus buying out a 35+ doesn't give you any cap hit relief. So signing him to a multi year deal would be stupid.

Agreed, so many things wrong with what was proposed above.
