I don't think either team wins this trade.

Ottawa gets an overpaid serviceable defensemen and Connor Brown for a terrible 5th defensemen and a 3rd round pick. I guess it comes down to what Ceci signs in Toronto for.

Must Ceci sign with the Leaves? Is his cap hit going to be at least what he got last year?

The fact that Ottawa gave up a pick is pretty embarrassing. Better be planning to pump the **** out of Connor brown and flip him, because he definitely isn't sticking around long term.

Really hope Leafs sign Ceci because that would at least be fun to watch

We shall see. It's pretty funny, they have no defensemen left and still have no cap to sign one.

If they go to Arbitration, Toronto can refuse what the Arbitrator says is the contract and Ceci will become a UFA

Great question: if the Leafs refuse to sign after the arbitration hearing doesn't he just become a UFA? Then this whole thing is a cap dump by Dubas. Maybe the mods could shed some light? @Banks @CapFriendly

And Happy Canada Day!

Yeah not a chance. But them having to actually play cody Ceci would make this deal a lot more fair.

The trade is.....Zaitsev and Brown for 3rd round pick. Browns trade value was about a third rounder...Leafs minor cap relief from Brown. Leafs non tender Ceci so the Leafs now have 4.5m to spend on another Dman.
Leafs cap compliant....and the ability to spend spend some cap on defence even if it's just a short term fix,

No i'm not. They were terrible defensively last year and are now down Gardiner, Hainsey, Zaitsev.

Sure you can say Sandin and Liljegren, but it's not certain they are ready.

How much will it cost to sign him? Just curious.

Meh. Ottawa gave up a 3rd for Brown, that's more than he was worth under the circumstances IMO. I think Toronto just dumped $6M in salary and actually got some stuff back in return. This is a genius move especially coming on the heels of the Marleau trade.

He's an RFA so nothing. Refuse the contract in Arbitration and he's gone. Perhaps if Dubas was even a decent GM, they could trade his rights.

They got a non-starter defensemen in Harpur and Ceci who is just as bad as Zaitsev. It pretty much equals Brown for a 3rd round pick.

If Dubas can sign Ceci to a decent contract, I would say Toronto wins, but it's close either way

Nah, they arent, they will brew for one more year in AHL.

If you check Cap space now, its 11,5M...lets say all this money goes to Marner....put Horton on LTIR and you get 5,3M for acquiring first D, you trade Kardi for second.....

This exactly. Anyone saying this is anything other than the most fat W for the Leafs are outing themselves as biased Leaf haters.
Ceci (slightly)> Zaitsev
Brown =3rd
Luchuk + Harpur > carcone
