Just thinking if they trade Ceci or do not sign him for $4.5 for 1 year and why not sign Gardiner for $6 per yer for 6~8 years?
They removed Zaitzev contract and looking at Gardiner still not signed (maybe his back is problem) I would go for Gardiner (if his back is not a problem).
Ottawa gets an overpaid serviceable defensemen and Connor Brown for a terrible 5th defensemen and a 3rd round pick. I guess it comes down to what Ceci signs in Toronto for.

We shall see. It's pretty funny, they have no defensemen left and still have no cap to sign one.

No i'm not. They were terrible defensively last year and are now down Gardiner, Hainsey, Zaitsev.
Sure you can say Sandin and Liljegren, but it's not certain they are ready.

He's an RFA so nothing. Refuse the contract in Arbitration and he's gone. Perhaps if Dubas was even a decent GM, they could trade his rights.
GOD DAMN .... YOU LOOK LIKE SUCH A JOKE RIGHT NOW.
They got a non-starter defensemen in Harpur and Ceci who is just as bad as Zaitsev. It pretty much equals Brown for a 3rd round pick.
If Dubas can sign Ceci to a decent contract, I would say Toronto wins, but it's close either way
What you're missing is that Toronto was locked into Zaitsev's contract for 5 years. Ceci will probably be signed to a 1 year contract and if he decides to go to arbitration the Leafs can just walk away making Ceci a UFA. So essentially they may have conned Ottawa into taking on the Zaitsev contract for free!

I would too ... Myers got $6,000,000 x 5 years ... he's probably the best comparable for Gardiner.
It also seems like Gardiner wants to stay in Toronto (apparently he's waiting to see if Dubas can make it work).
I bet he'd be open to something like $5,500,000 x 7 years or $5,000,000 x 8 years.
Maybe not quite that low ... but it's still $10,000,000 more than Myers contract overall.
That's a pretty strong top-4 with solid depth as well ... and maybe we can get a pick for Ceci.
Switch Girardi with Liljegren lineup wise and roll pairs like this:
Rielly(5.000)-Barrie(2.750)
Muzzin(4.000)-Dermott(0.863)
Gardiner(5.000)-Liljegren(0.863)
Holl (0.675)
Total for 7 skaters = 19.151 https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1287540

Toronto can't sign Gardiner. People aren't talking about the fact that right now they have cap problems. Yes, they still do. They still need to move someone out.

They have just under 12M to sign Marner and Kerfoot. Marner is going to get more than 9M most likely. Aho got less than 8.5, and i'd argue that Aho is the better player, but it seems like Marner really wants more, and if he gets 10.5M, then they have about 1.5M to sign Kerfoot, which isn't going to be enough. Even if it's 10M they have 2M to sign Kerfoot.

They have 16.
Why does no one who chirps the Leafs ever realise that Nathan Horton is not an NHL regular?!?
Is it because they actually have no ****ing idea what they are talking about? I think so!
Leafs making some bold moves I really like this... Cody Ceci was like always treated badly, when did fantasy it seemed idiots would make him healthy scratch... Yet if he played he would usually produce some points? Guy has scored 10 goals before, shoots right, lets them move a guy making 4.5M who seemed hated too .

I know Horton is not an NHL regular. CF shows Toronto having 11M in cap space, but that's because the Ceci contract isn't official yet. If Horton is placed on LTIR and Ceci signs for 4.5M that gives them about 12M.

Sign Ceci.
1@4.5
3.8 in SB's
Flip back to OTT or another cheap ass team (CAR newly interested considering how much they have to hand out to Aho) as he only costs 700k
Return doesn't matter

How does he only cost 700K? His cap hit is still 4.5M, right? 700K in real money or cap money?

700k in real money. A team like CAR (who is newly cash poor thank you Bergy) might want a guy like that to play depth mins. Hell flip him back to OTT or move him to CBJ if you don't think CAR would be interested.

You're not getting a pick for him at that contract. You're paying to move his contract. He's probably a bottom pairing D IMO, and he's getting paid 4.5M.

why would you be paying to move 700k to a cash poor team lol? It isn't a cap dump (not at the time of trading anyway). Many expect the Leafs to flip him anyway.

Maybe someone will take him at his contract, but it's unlikely. It's not about the cash, it's about the 4.5M in cap money.
Idk all the details about the money in the signings and everything but these owners have so much money that they can pay it.
There are budget teams man. I get that you are a New York fan and might not understand that, but being able to pay a guy 700k (with a nice aav to hit the floor with) is a massively important thing for many teams. Real money matters

But there's still that 4.5M in cap money. There is also a salary cap. Cap money also matters. Maybe somebody trades for Ceci, but there could be better options available for them. Hard to know.
