As a Jets fan, I LOVED watching Tanev every single night. He gives the stereotypical 110% of a grinder. Blocks shots like crazy, etc. Pens fans will love him. But my god this is easily the worst contract that will be signed today. Tanev offers no offence and his underlying defence and pk stats are BAD.

Over the last few years, his Corsi for% drop TWENTY PERCENT when he doesn’t play with both Adam Lowry and Andrew Copp, two players whose numbers stay consistent regardless of line mates. This is a garbage contract through and through. And like I said I love Tanev. Happy for him but GMJR is crazy here

Since when did he become worth 3.5M AAV? Not only that, but 6 years?

Would have to assume someone like Bryan Rust is going to be moved. Pens still need space to sign their RFAs. Tanev replaces the role Rust has on the team most likely.

Pittsburgh really loves overpaying defensemen and giving too many years. What's this weird mantra?

If he's not, then this will be a decent signing. By then I'm sure the going rate in free agency for a player like him will be much higher. It is a bit of a gamble, but it might be worth it.

I loved Tanev at this AAV, but for 3-4 years. He's just not the type of player that will adapt to the speed when he's 32. He's just never been a skill guy.

No, but if he maintains his speed he could still be quite serviceable into his 30s. Then this deal most likely becomes a bargain. Untill then though, people are going to criticize it just like the Johnson signing, and the Gudbranson trade. The important thing to really realize and focus on is that if the penguins do not have success next year it is not because of this signing.

The Johnson trade contract flamed out in year one of the 5 year deal though. I at least believe Tanev will be good for a couple years. Johnson was a horrible signing and everyone outside of the PIT front office knew it.

I don't think Johnson has been as bad as people make him out to be. Once they finally put him on the left side permanently he began to stabilize and wasn't bad. If he can continue that trend into next year they will be fine. Most likely is too long of a contract but by then the pens don't have much of a chance anyway. Malkin and Letang contracts are up in three years. That is the window. After that it is up in the air.

I like this deal for the penguins.
For 2 reasons. 1st is the cap hit. Which will run till he's 32-33. end of his career really. If you think this is a bad cap hit, you aren't paying attention. Because in 2 years you will see the cap get some serious bump when they do new TV contracts, and then they add the expansion team. Which means everyone is getting a raise by then. His cap hit will be pretty low at that point in time. So it's a building for the future move.

The 2nd reason is, it means JJ is on the way out. I don't think people looked at this move the right way. Say what you want about him. But he had 278 hits last year. The year before in 61 games he had 188. He's the physicality they are looking for on the ice. There is no doubt why they signed him. To play that game. Which will be one way they replace JJ when he's shipped off.
