Seems good but Meier could regress, he's only had one really good year

Good for the team, bad for the player. So good I guess?

Wait, a Star RFA asking for reasonable amounts of money? What is this nonsense?

Big thing about this deal to me is that he's still going to be an RFA after this deal is done. Big win for the sharks

What a steal for SJS. Meier is the real MVP. Taking money off in order to win a cup.

Good for both. Meier managed to get decent $ and a short term. Cap's expected to go up a good chunk in a couple years with the new TV deal. Also, apparently $ in the last season is expected to be 10M which would make his QO require $10M as well

Think he becomes UFA straight after the 4 years. They could lose him in the shortest amount of time possible, excluding trades ofc.

Incorrect.

Oops, Meier’s first season in SJ was 34 games, so he didn’t get an accrued season for that. therefore, he isn’t UFA until 2024. Thanks to our pals @CapFriendly for that. ?

Edit: also you can see it at the top of this page - EXPIRY STATUS: RFA

This is mind boggling from the way the contract is set up. The last year of the deal is at $10M, and that's going to be his QO when this one expires. I know it helped lower the AAV right now, but it's still an incredibly weird deal.

One season is not really enough to justify 6 million a year, at least it's only for 4 years.

This came in at a bit below the anticipated AAV I figured he’d get but I was thinking more along the lines of a 5-6y deal. As others have pointed out, this doesn’t even take him to UFA, although with a $10M QO he’s either gonna be resigned long-term or become a de-facto UFA at the end of it.

The $4M v $10M is over 100% difference, which I thought was the limit under the CBA, so as to prevent the ridiculous back-diving contacts (see Luongo, Roberto et al.) of the past.

He is essentially a UFA because his qo after this deal will be 10M and in no realm is Meier worth 10M

Rules are different for frontloaded vs backloaded contracts. Backloaded contracts are essentially done to reduce the AAV by tacking on years that you don't anticipate the player ever playing, potentially trading the deal to a team struggling to reach the floor where they don't have to spend much in actual $ to pay the player, but get credit for the cap hit. I'm too lazy to look it up, but someone posted elsewhere that the rule was that the increase between 2 years cannot be greater than the $ paid in the 1st 2 years. 4m the 1st/2nd year, 6m the 3rd year, 10m the last year fits that.

As someone said on ftf, the QO having to be $10M doesn't mean a ton. When his contract's expiring, they offer him 10mx1 to qualify him, if he wants more term he might negotiate and get less than 10m AAV. Also, I could very well see Meier being worth that much in a few years. He only had 30-36-66 this year, but his underlying numbers were great, he'll likely get a decent amount of time on the top power play unit with Pokey gone, and he's still only 22 years old (turning 23 at the start of the season). This is especially true if the cap jumps significantly upon the new TV deal likely to come in a couple of years.

I saw people calling this a steal but I think its an alright deal... Something like Wild Bill at 8 years for under 6M maybe is a steal but this isn't... HE got a decent amt of money, I think they would have to tender him 10M a year at end of this or some BS... Sharks got to try to win a Cup before Seattle comes in, I think that window slammed shut a while back... Though they sunk a lot of money into a few players trying to get a cup within next few years... If they are in shambles at end of this contract they can probably still move him for value if he has any smile.

I’m sorry but I am taking Meier over William Karlsson every day of the week for the next 10 years.

I'm sure krap Karl will be on IR for most of those 10 years or never play a full season... Likely he will have less games played in 10 years than Timo will in 4 wink... I thought he would do better for Sharks but then he faded a bit... Shanks didn't get enough scoring from a few of the depth forwards, Kane vanished instead of flourish smile... I kinda like Kings getting Iaffallo for a deal around Forbort money but not into Reaves kinda green smile. I was against Karl coming, I think Sharks win cup if they kept Hoffman going w/ D-men they had on right side/keeping Tierney/DeMelo etc... Then maybe making a move to get a left shot D-man like a Muzzin a guy who can score 10-20 goals not 1 like Dillon or whatever Vlasic had smile.
