7M is a bit high but I'd say it's fair overall.

But I'm a little surprised he didn't leave. You'd think there would've been a couple other teams willing to pay $7M, right?

Well, it seems that NYI isn't as bad as an organization as it was a short while ago.

As in like 1 year ago when Tavares left LOL? I actually think this is one of the better signings of the day.

Way too long. The max I would have thought acceptable 5y @ 7M or maybe 6y at 6M or a hair higher. At this cap hit, in 5y this deal is going to look Ladd. I mean badd. Keeping a player just cause isn’t always the best course of action. Will he be productive next year? Sure! In 5y? I’m not so confident. He’s be 30 starting Y2 of this contract and by the start of Y7 35. If his career trajectory is like Joe Pavelski instead of say Jason Spezza, then it’s a win. But the odds aren’t in the Isles favour.

Absolutely fantastic for both the Islanders, and Carolina for cockblocking (maybe) Montreal from getting him.

This kind of contract is why Pacioretty got traded. Glad the Habs didn't go this route.

Kudos to Bergevin for his metal.

I have to take it back a little after Lehner left. But, yes, I mean exactly when Tavares left: After him leaving they went deep into the playoffs and the place looks like that much better now. I mean, Garth Snow era was a joke.

Report on SN says he was looking for $9M AAV. Crazy, right? Crafty old Lou would never budge.

If I were him, I wouldn't want to come back after publicly being Plan B, especially when there are a lot of other teams that had him as their Plan A. But he's a loyal guy, and I respect that. Islanders needed to keep him, and they did. Not gonna lie, I really wanted to see what a Dear Anders video would look like.

Fans also loved Tavares before he left.

But I get the difference. Lee was never the face of the franchise, he wasn't "the savior", he wasn't the first overall pick, or anything like that. I just think the Islanders disrespected him by very clearly showing that he was the backup plan to Panarin.

totally. we'll never know for sure but it sounds like he never took any other offer seriously. I wonder if he would've been back even if the Isles got Panarin.

This is a bad contract that NY was forced into because they couldn't lose another captain.

By NHL value he's a 7M player ... the term is maybe a bit too long but it's worth it IMO.
